Respiratory Therapist (RRT) – Travel/Contract Position
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Specialty: Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics
Contract Length: Up to 26 weeks
Job Overview
- Adult Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with critical care experience required to work in a high-volume Emergency Room at a Level 1 Trauma Center.
- Night shifts primarily: 3x12-hour shifts (7 PM – 7 AM), with 4x12-hour shifts available by request.
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
- Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
- Floating within skillset required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Respiratory Therapist license in Virginia.
- Minimum of 1 year of Respiratory Therapist experience, with experience within the last year required.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
- Experience in ventilator management, including use of BiPAP, CPAP, and HFNC (High Flow Nasal Cannula).
- Experience with EPIC electronic medical record system.
Clinical Skills
- Proficient in aerosol and medication delivery systems (mask, trach, MDI, Medihaler). Skilled in administering medications such as Albuterol, Atrovent, Combivent, Flovent, Pulmicort, Mucomyst, racemic epinephrine, inhaled Flolan, inhaled steroids, bicarbonate, and lidocaine.
- Competent in arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation and ventilator management including BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, flow-by, troubleshooting high-pressure alarms, and weaning from mechanical ventilation.
- Airway management skills including extubation, oral/nasal airway placement, suctioning, sputum collection, and tracheostomy care.
- Proficient in oxygen therapy and nebulizer setups (handheld, T-piece, trach collar, ultrasonic).
Unit and Patient Population
- Patient ratio approximately 1:25.
- Serves adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
- Robust Assess and Treat protocols with ventilator management and liberation policies in place.
- Equipment used includes Servo I, Servo U, V-60 BiPAP, Optiflow heated high flow, iNO with iNOvent, and LTV1200.
Scheduling and Policies
- Shift hours: Night shifts primarily (7 PM – 7 AM), 3x12-hour shifts standard, 4x12-hour shifts available by request.
- Time off requests must be submitted with application.
- Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2-week period.
- Weekend and holiday work requirements as noted above.
- Locals are not accepted due to radius restrictions.
Required Documentation and Compliance
- I-9 or attestation required.
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address more than 100 miles from the facility required.
- Background check covering 7 years of history required within 1 year of start date.
- E-Verify or attestation required.
- Education verification of highest earned degree required.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Fit test within 1 year of start, updated annually.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually.
- Required immunizations or positive titers for: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Two clinical references required.
- Completion of skills checklist annually.
- Photo for badge required (professional photo with plain background).
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start.
Additional Notes
- Candidates must review and acknowledge the contract staff orientation manual prior to start.
- Candidates must complete fit testing regardless of prior fit test on file (except students).
- Facility is a Magnet-designated, 703-bed acute care teaching hospital with Level 1 Trauma Center designation.
- The hospital serves a broad patient population including pediatric and adult trauma, neurotrauma, and cardiovascular cases.
This position is ideal for Respiratory Therapists with strong critical care skills seeking a travel contract in a high-acuity, trauma-focused environment with advanced respiratory care technology.
