Description

Registered Nurse – Stroke/Neuro PCU (Travel/Contract)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Hours per week: 36
  • Unit: Telemetry Progressive Care Unit (PCU) specializing in stroke and neurology patients
  • Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, staffing goal 1:4
  • Floating: Required within skillset
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per contract
  • Charting System: EPIC experience required
  • Call-off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, with radius rule applied
  • First-Time Travelers: Accepted, but travel experience preferred

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (American Heart Association only)
  • BLS (American Heart Association only)
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, and dysrhythmia interpretation/management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care
  • Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
  • Neuro PCU experience
  • Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, IMC, and stepdown units

IV Drips Managed

  • Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, Ketamine

Required Licensure

  • Active Virginia RN license or Compact RN license
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state

Required Background and Compliance

  • 7-year background check within 1 year of start (covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required
  • NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start
  • I-9 or attestation required
  • Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing (must meet radius rule)
  • Photo for badge required (professional, plain background)
  • Compliance checklist, access and confidentiality agreement, and new hire paperwork must be completed prior to start
  • Fit testing required within 1 year and updated annually (not required for students)
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
  • Flu vaccination documentation or declination form required during flu season
  • Two clinical references required
  • Skills checklist updated annually

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in Telemetry Progressive Care Unit (PCU), preferably within the last year
  • Neuro PCU Progressive Care Unit experience
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system

Additional Information

  • Remote telemetry monitors remain on unit; tele-sitting implemented to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
  • The unit is a Joint Commission certified primary stroke center
  • Candidates must be prepared to float within their skillset
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment and core competency exams required as applicable
  • Radiation badges for new candidates are not provided; existing badge holders will continue to receive badges until assignment ends

This position is ideal for RNs with neuro PCU experience who are comfortable managing telemetry patients, cardiac drips, and emergency response in a specialized stroke/neuro progressive care setting. Night shift availability and flexibility for weekends and holidays are required.
