Description

Registered Nurse - PCU (Travel/Contract)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Work in the Emergency Department Transitional Care Unit (ED TCU) / Observation Unit (PCU)
  • 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM)
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:5, dependent on hospital capacity and ED volume
  • Unit holds med/surg or PCU level patients awaiting inpatient bed assignment; inpatient orders and admission documentation completed here
  • Floating within skillset required

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Completion of at least one travel assignment
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Clinical skills including cardiac monitoring, emergency response, and interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Experience with chest tube care
  • Management of cardiac/vasoactive drips (no titration)
  • IV insulin protocol with titration
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Scheduling & Work Requirements

  • Weekend shifts: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Must work at least one holiday during the 13-week contract
  • Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • Locals accepted within a specified radius
  • First-time travelers not accepted

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • I-9 or attestation
  • Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility (required within 48 hours of signing)
  • E-Verify or attestation
  • 7-year background check (covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years), not required annually unless there is a 30+ day break between assignments
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification of highest earned degree (transcript or diploma required)
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Fit test within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • TB questionnaire required for all candidates
  • Immunizations or positive titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Photo for badge (professional, plain background, no selfies or filters)
  • Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance checklists prior to start
  • Medication and competency exams as applicable
  • Two clinical references required
  • Complete employment application/resume
  • Annual skills checklist update required

Additional Notes

  • Must review and acknowledge orientation safety manual prior to start
  • Candidates must complete fit testing regardless of prior fit on file (except students)
  • Flu vaccination not required but mask and declination form required if declined
  • Radiation badges for new candidates are not provided; existing badge holders grandfathered in
  • VA State Police Search completed onsite first day of orientation for certain candidate types (no pre-action required)

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center with Magnet designation, recognized for nursing excellence. The role requires strong clinical skills in cardiac telemetry and emergency care within a fast-paced transitional care environment.
