Description

Registered Nurse – PCU/MS Float (Travel/Contract)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
Hours per Week: 36


Job Overview

  • Must be comfortable working across all Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MS) units.
  • Floating between units may occur 2-3 times per shift (every 4 hours as staffing needs change).
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
  • Holiday requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
  • First-time travel nurses are accepted.
  • Local candidates accepted within a specified radius.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • ACLS and BLS certifications issued by the American Heart Association
  • Experience with blood product administration
  • Central line care experience
  • Tracheostomy management experience
  • Chest tube management experience (Emerson/PleurEvac)
  • Cardiac monitoring experience
  • Experience titrating cardiac drips
  • Experience responding to emergencies via Rapid Response/Code teams
  • Experience managing PCA and heparin protocols
  • Experience handling endocrine and metabolic conditions
  • Telemetry experience
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Unit Details

  • PCU nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 5:1
  • MS nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 6:1, may flex up to 7:1

Scheduling and Policies

  • Staffing needs are reassessed every 4 hours, requiring flexibility to float units.
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2-week period.
  • All requests for return to office (RTO), block scheduling, and special scheduling must be submitted with application.

Required Documentation and Compliance

  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility required within 48 hours of signing.
  • Background check covering the last 7 years required within 1 year of start date. New background check required if there is a 30+ day break between assignments.
  • E-Verify or attestation required.
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required; transcript or diploma may be accepted as a placeholder if verification is pending.
  • Primary source verification of state license must be completed within 30 days of start.
  • NURSYS verification required for all RNs within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year, updated annually; if previously positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire required.
  • Fit test for N95 masks within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students).
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Immunization or positive titer documentation required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (positive titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Seasonal flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form required.
  • Professional photo for badge required (no selfies or filters, plain background).
  • Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements within 48 hours of signing.
  • Completion of new hire paperwork prior to start.
  • Review of contract staff orientation manual prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs).
  • Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted).
  • Updated skills checklist required annually.

Additional Notes

  • This position is at a Level I Trauma Center with Magnet designation for nursing excellence.
  • The hospital provides advanced specialty care including cardiovascular and telemetry services.
  • Prior travel experience is not required.
