Description
Registered Nurse – PCU Float
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Float position covering Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MS) units; must be comfortable working across all PCU and MS units.
- Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM). Option for 4 shifts per week available upon request.
- Floating frequency: May float 2-3 times per shift based on staffing needs (re-evaluated every 4 hours).
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
- Holiday requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
- Charting system: EPIC experience required.
- Patient ratios: PCU average 5:1; MS average 6:1 (may flex up to 7:1).
Required Qualifications
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia.
- ACLS certification.
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
Education
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1 year of recent Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience.
- Experience in Medical-Surgical (Med Surg) nursing.
- Proficient in central line care.
- Skilled in tracheostomy management.
- Experienced in non-invasive airway support (e.g., nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP).
- Experience with chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac).
- Competent in dysrhythmia interpretation and management.
- Skilled in titrating cardiac drips.
- Able to respond effectively to emergencies via Rapid Response and Code teams.
- Experience managing PCA protocols.
- Experience administering IV insulin.
- Background in telemetry nursing.
- Cardiovascular experience in pre/post cardiac catheterization settings.
- Proficient with EPIC charting system.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility.
- E-Verify or attestation required.
- 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years; must be current within 1 year of start.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals.
- Education verification of highest earned degree; transcript or diploma required.
- NURSYS verification for RN license within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Fit test for respirator masks within 1 year, updated annually.
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year; if positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire.
- Immunization or positive titer documentation for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, and Varicella.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Seasonal flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form.
- Professional photo for badge (plain background, no selfies or filters).
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start.
- Completion of new hire paperwork and orientation materials as required.
Additional Requirements
- Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted).
- Complete employment application/resume.
- Annual update of skills checklist.
- Must work within the facility’s radius rule (within 100 miles).
- Facility may call off one shift per two weeks.
- First-time travelers accepted; prior travel experience not required.
