Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse

Location: Potsdam, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work on a mixed acuity unit including Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Medical-Surgical Telemetry (MS Tele), and Medical-Surgical patients.
  • Patient diagnoses include PCU and MS Tele, surgical pre/post-op (ENT, general surgery, trauma surgery, ortho surgery), overflow medical diagnoses, and rare pediatric patients (travelers assigned only if experienced).
  • Ratios:
    • Days and weekends: 1 nurse to 3-5 patients
    • Nights: 1 nurse to 3-6 patients
  • Shift: Night shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM)
  • Float requirement: Yes, may float to sister units including West 2, West 3, and Observation unit.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Return to Office (RTO): Maximum 7 days

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New York
  • Minimum 3 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association

Orientation & Unit Details

  • Unit orientation: 12 hours
  • Unit systems: EPIC (electronic health record), Pyxis (medication dispensing), SBAR (communication tool)
  • Special procedures: TCAR preferred

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year criminal background check (all aliases included)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification for nursing degree
  • State license verification (NYS RN license) within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
  • Harassment prevention training certificate (New York, annual)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam as required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam
  • Photo for badge (passport-style with solid background)
  • Review of patient confidentiality, sexual harassment prevention, patient experience training, and compliance attestations prior to start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start, updated annually (specific mask types required; PAPR exemption available if fit test failed)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination within 10 years (TD not accepted)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start; TB questionnaire if applicable
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive, completed series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Drug testing within 30 days of start (specific panel required)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season (documentation deadline December 3)
  • Eye exam (Snellen) within 1 year of start
  • References: 2 professional references required
  • Employment application and skills checklist (updated annually)
  • 7-year work history verification (attestation letter accepted as last resort)

Additional Notes

  • Scrubs: Any solid color
  • Locals not accepted; must live more than 50 miles from the facility
  • Float to sister units as needed
  • Travelers without prior travel experience are accepted
