Description

Registered Nurse – Stroke/Neuro PCU

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Night, 3 shifts of 12 hours (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Additional shifts: 4x12s available upon request
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Floating: Required to float within skillset
  • Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, staffing goal 1:4
  • Unit: Telemetry Progressive Care Unit specializing in stroke and neurology patients
  • Charting System: EPIC experience required

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Telemetry PCU - Progressive Care Unit experience within the last year (minimum 1 year)
  • Neuro PCU - Progressive Care Unit experience
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Dysrhythmia interpretation and management skills
  • Respiratory support experience including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, and non-invasive airway management
  • Experience with EPIC electronic charting system

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Manage IV drips including Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, Ketamine
  • Use remote telemetry with monitors remaining on unit; tele-sitting implemented to increase Patient Care Tech coverage

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Checks:
    • 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years (not required annually unless 30+ day break in assignments)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education Verification: Highest earned degree verification required; transcript or diploma required as proof
  • Physical Exam: Within 1 year of start, confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations:
    • TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year; if positive, clear chest X-ray and annual TB questionnaire required
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required
    • Hepatitis B: Positive titer, vaccine series, or declination accepted
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or mask and declination form during flu season
  • Fit Testing: Respirator fit test within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students)
  • Photo for Badge: Professional photo required with plain background (no selfies or filters)
  • References: Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
  • Employment Application: Complete application or resume required
  • Skills Checklist: Must be updated annually
  • State Police Search: Completed onsite first day of orientation for certain candidates; no pre-start action required

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must provide a valid Driver’s License or State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility; required within 48 hours of signing
  • Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Remote telemetry monitors remain on unit; tele-sitting used to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
  • Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
  • Must complete compliance and confidentiality agreements within 48 hours of signing

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Joint Commission certified primary stroke center with a focus on advanced neuro and stroke care in a telemetry PCU setting.
