Job Opportunity: Med/Surg Nurse (RN)

Position Details

• Employment Type: Contractor
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: 12-hour Evening Shift
• Hours per Week: 36

Unit and Patient Information

• Med/Surg unit with patient ratio:

  • Day: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
  • Evening: 1 nurse to 4-6 patients
  • Overnight: 1 nurse to 1:6 patients
• Patient types include:

  • Oncology patients (some pediatric >1 year old, but no pediatric experience required as travelers will not care for pediatric patients)
  • Surgical patients (bowel surgeries, genitourinary surgeries, continuous bladder irrigation)
  • Medical conditions such as cellulitis, GI bleeds, congestive heart failure, COVID/TB patients, outpatient infusions (antibiotics/fluids)
• Chemo certification is not required

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of nursing experience in Med/Surg
• Current BLS certification
• RN license appropriate for the role

Skills and Competencies

• Proficient with chest tubes and stable tracheostomy management (preferred)
• Strong IV skills including port and central line care
• Knowledgeable in CPAP, BiPAP, and Airvo respiratory support devices

Orientation and Scheduling

• Orientation period: 1-2 days, depending on comfort level
• Weekend rotation: weekends only (as of current scheduling)
• Holiday work: expected every other holiday
• Call is not required but can be requested through management
• Time off requires nurse manager approval

Support and Resources on Unit

• CNA support with ratios varying by shift (Day: 1:4-5, Evening: 1:6, Overnight: 1:8)
• Charge nurse available who takes a partial patient assignment
• Phlebotomy support available; RNs draw from central lines
• IV/VAT team available on Mondays and Thursdays
• Respiratory therapy available 24/7
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7
• Rapid Response Team and Code Blue team available
• Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy available weekdays; limited on weekends
• Centralized telemetry monitoring with tele tech support

Technology and Equipment

• Preferred charting system: Epic
• Equipment includes Alaris pumps and Pyxis medication dispensing system

Additional Information

• Floating assignments may include other Med/Surg units and ER holds; this unit is first to float
• COVID-19 vaccination is required
• Scrub color: any professional color is acceptable

This position is suitable for nurses with Med/Surg experience seeking a 13-week contract on an evening shift with a supportive multidisciplinary team and a variety of patient care experiences.
