Description

Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Neuro (Travel/Contract)

Location: Rochester, New York
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Position in an acute rehab hospital setting focusing on patients with stroke, brain injury, and spinal cord injuries.
  • Float required on Medical-Surgical unit.
  • Weekend coverage every other weekend (EOW).
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: Day shift 1:5, Night shift 1:12.
  • Block scheduling may be accommodated but is not guaranteed.
  • No local hires accepted within a 75-mile radius.
  • Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: maximum 1 week allowed during contract.
  • First-time travelers accepted.

Shift Details

  • Day shift: 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each)
  • Total hours per week: 36

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State (primary source verification required within 30 days of start).
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year.
  • Experience in neurology or neuro rehab patient care.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Patient Population & Environment

  • Patients primarily with stroke, brain injury, and spinal cord injuries.
  • Acute rehab hospital setting.
  • Use of specialized lifting equipment (Hoyer lift, sit-to-stand lift).
  • EPIC electronic health record system preferred.

Health & Compliance Requirements

Candidates must complete the following health-related requirements and lab work within 5 days of contract signing:

  • Physical exam (within 1 year, updated annually).
  • Fit mask test (annual; acceptable masks include Halyard duckbill 1870+, 1860 Regular, 1860 Small).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year).
  • Immunizations or positive titers for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive titer, completed series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, opiates, etc.).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season (documentation deadline December 3).
  • Snellen eye exam (within 1 year).
  • COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required.

Background & Verification

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 3 months of start (including felony, SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, education verification).
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 3 months and updated monthly.
  • Foreign education equivalency evaluation required if applicable.
  • Employment application and work history verification required.
  • References (2 within 3 years) required for direct hire candidates.

Additional Notes

  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required.
  • Facility-specific documents and attestations must be completed as part of onboarding.
  • Fingerprinting and additional background checks may be required for certain units (mental health, behavioral health, home health aide, long-term care).
  • No pending licenses accepted.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neuro rehab setting with a supportive team and a focus on complex neurological patient care.
