Description

Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Provide specialized nursing care in a 24-bed Labor and Delivery unit caring for low and high-risk pregnant patients from antepartum through delivery.
  • Unit includes a 3-bed triage area, 2 operating rooms, and 2 post-anesthesia care beds.
  • Average monthly deliveries: ~250; triage patients: ~350.
  • Referring center for high-risk pregnancies within approximately a 150-mile radius.
  • Accepts pregnant patients over 20 weeks gestation.

Schedule & Work Hours

  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM).
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
  • On-call required with a maximum of 24 hours per 6-week schedule block.
  • Must work at least one holiday during the 13-week contract.
  • Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of Labor and Delivery experience, with experience within the last year preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Unit Staffing & Environment

  • Staffing ratios based on state obstetrics regulations:
    • Laboring patients: 1 nurse per 1-2 patients.
    • Antepartum patients: 1 nurse per 3-4 patients.
    • Triage patients: 1 nurse per 3 patients.
    • OB Operating Room (OBOR) patients: 2 nurses per patient.
    • OB Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) patients: 1 nurse per 1-2 patients.
  • Team includes Clinical Team Leaders (RNs), Registered Nurses, and 4 Nursing Assistants.

Health & Background Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year prior to start, confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year; if previously positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year plus annual TB questionnaire.
  • Required immunizations or positive titers for:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Fit test for respirator mask within 1 year, updated annually.
  • Background check covering 7 years of history, including education verification and national databases (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG).
  • State police search completed onsite on first day of orientation (for certain candidates).

Additional Requirements

  • Driver’s license or state ID with an address more than 100 miles from the facility is required within 48 hours of signing.
  • Must complete facility-specific compliance, confidentiality, and orientation paperwork prior to start.
  • Professional photo required for badge issuance.
  • Core competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency exams as applicable.
  • Must comply with call-off and scheduling policies, including submitting all scheduling requests with application.

Notes

  • First-time travelers are accepted.
  • Local candidates are not accepted due to radius restrictions.
  • Prior travel experience is not required.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity obstetrical unit with a diverse patient population and a supportive clinical team. Candidates should be prepared for night shifts and weekend work, with a strong foundation in labor and delivery nursing skills.
