Description

ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (4x12 hours, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 48 hours
Schedule: Every other weekend and every other holiday; time off cannot be approved for Memorial Day or 4th of July; 40 hours can be approved for other time off; block scheduling not guaranteed


Job Description

  • Float pool position covering various ICU and intermediate care units including:
    • Medical ICU
    • Thoracic Cardiovascular ICU
    • Coronary Care Unit
    • Surgical Trauma ICU (Level 1)
    • Neuro & Neurosurgery ICU
    • Critical Care and Intermediate Care Special Pathogens Unit (COVID)
    • Thoracic Cardiovascular Intermediate Unit
    • Surgical Trauma Intermediate Unit
    • Neuro & Neurosurgery Intermediate Unit
    • ED Boarders (patients admitted but boarding in ED prior to room assignment)
  • Must adhere to facility’s float policy
  • Epic electronic health record experience required

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID must be carried during hours of service
  • 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated every 30 days
  • Education verification required; BSN preferred, ASN minimum if BSN not held
  • Official transcript acceptable; photocopy of diploma not accepted
  • Fingerprinting required for Behavioral Health and certain units; facility will notify if needed
  • Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check required only for Behavioral Health and specific units, processed within 45 days prior to start

Certifications and Competencies

  • Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required as applicable
  • Additional certifications (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC) may be required depending on unit assignment (verify with recruiter)

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months attesting ability to meet physical demands of position
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (Tdap after age 11, no exemptions allowed)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol (2-step PPD or Qgold acceptable; Tspot not accepted)
  • Annual TB questionnaire if past positive TB test
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; no declinations accepted for measles
  • Hepatitis B: Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required; if low/negative, Hep B Antigen titer also required
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required; declination accepted but must be documented
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (no exemptions or declinations accepted)
  • 10-panel drug screen including marijuana and fentanyl within 2 months of start, updated annually

Additional Facility Requirements

  • Review and initial professional appearance guidelines
  • Complete facility-specific screening, release authorization, and traveler compliance forms prior to start
  • Fit testing required for patient-facing clinical roles, completed onsite if needed
  • Latex allergy questionnaire required if applicable (do not upload to credentialing record)

References and Evaluations

  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required
  • Performance and internal evaluations required if candidate has worked with the agency over 1 year
  • Complete employment application/resume and skills checklist as applicable

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
  • Night shift with high acuity float pool assignments demands flexibility and strong critical care skills
  • Time off restrictions apply around major holidays; scheduling flexibility limited
