Description

Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Hours per Week: 36
  • Charting System: EPIC experience required
  • Weekend Requirement: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
  • Floating: Required to float within skillset
  • Charge/Precepting: May be required to work as charge nurse and precept new staff
  • Patient Ratio: 1:6
  • Unit Type: Adult acute care unit caring for patients with elective back surgeries, trauma, prostate cancer, gallbladders, cellulitis
  • Accepts First-Time Travelers: Yes
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, subject to radius rule (within 100 miles)
  • Pending License Accepted: Yes, if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN license required

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of medical-surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience in charge nurse roles
  • Experience with Rapid Response/Code teams
  • Experience with EPIC charting system

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, valid within 1 year of start
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education Verification: Highest earned degree verification required
  • State License Verification: Primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs within 30 days of start
  • Physical Exam: Within 1 year of start, confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations/Health Requirements:
    • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year or clear chest X-ray if previously positive, updated annually
    • TB Questionnaire required for all candidates
    • Proof of immunity or vaccination for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination form (masking required if declined)
  • Fit Testing: Fit test within 1 year of start, updated annually (specific mask types accepted)
  • Photo for Badge: Professional photo required with plain background, no selfies or filters
  • Driver’s License/State ID: Must provide within 48 hours of signing; address must be within 100 miles of facility
  • E-Verify or Attestation: Required
  • Orientation: Review of contract staff orientation manual prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
  • Other Facility-Specific Documents: Compliance checklist, access and confidentiality agreement, new hire paperwork, and pain assessment expectation signature required

Additional Notes

  • The facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
  • Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted.
  • Candidates with gaps of 30+ days between assignments require updated background checks within 30 days of new start date.
  • Candidates must complete all required documentation and certifications timely to avoid delays in start date.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center with Magnet designation, providing care in a teaching hospital environment with a diverse patient population.
