PACU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Roanoke, Virginia
Position Details
- Job Title: PACU Registered Nurse
- Location: Roanoke, Virginia
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Hours per Week: 36 hours
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work at least one holiday during the 13-week contract
- On-Call: Participates in call rotation based on sign-up
- Floating: Required to float within skillset as needed
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum of 1 year of Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) experience, with recent PACU experience within the last year
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Clinical Skills & Competencies
- IV therapy including blood products, central/PICC line care, and IV starts
- Respiratory care: ventilated patients, chest tubes, airway management, tracheostomy, extubation, End-Tidal CO2 monitoring
- Neurological care: craniotomy, external ventricular drain (EVD), spine surgery, stroke scale assessment
- Cardiac care: management of antiarrhythmics, antihypertensives, vasopressors, opioids, reversal agents, arterial lines, dysrhythmia management, CPR
- Surgical procedures: ENT, general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, total joints, cholecystectomy, spinal surgery
- Monitoring and assessments: lab values, isolation precautions, malignant hyperthermia, pain management, PCA, RASS scale
- Pediatric patient management
- Pre/post-operative care: EKG, consent, catheterization (male/female), endoscopy, operative procedures
Unit & Patient Population
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2
- Patient population includes adolescents, infants, adults, pediatrics, and geriatrics
- Surgical specialties covered: ICU, trauma surgery, pediatrics, bariatric, breast, colorectal, dental, emergency general surgery, ENT, gastroenterology, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, podiatry, pulmonology, urology
Documentation & System Requirements
- Charting experience required with EPIC electronic health record system
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years (must be current within 1 year of start)
- E-Verify or attestation required
- Education verification of highest earned degree required
- NURSYS verification required for RN license (must be run within 30 days of start)
- Drug screen: Negative 10-panel drug test within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- Fit test for N95 masks within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year, updated annually; if past positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year plus annual TB questionnaire
- Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form required during flu season
- Photo for badge (professional, plain background, no selfies or filters)
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start
- Completion of new hire paperwork and orientation materials as required
Additional Notes
- Candidates must provide a valid driver’s license or state ID with an address more than 100 miles from the facility to meet radius requirements; otherwise, submission will be canceled
- Facility allows one call-off shift per two weeks
- No local candidates accepted
- References: Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)

- Annual competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency tests required as applicable
