Description
Registered Nurse – PCU Float (Night Shift)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Float position covering Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MS) units.
- Must be comfortable working across all PCU and MS units.
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM).
- Option to request 4 shifts per week.
- Staffing needs may require floating 2-3 times per shift (every 4 hours).
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block.
- Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
- First-time travelers accepted.
- Local candidates accepted within a specified radius.
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, an active Virginia RN license (state or compact) is required.
Required Certifications
- ACLS (American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
Required Clinical Skills
- Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, and blood product administration.
- Skilled in central line care, tracheostomy management, and non-invasive airway support (nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, chest tubes).
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management.
- Ability to titrate cardiac drips and respond to emergencies via Rapid Response/Code teams.
- Capable of managing PCA and heparin protocols, administering IV insulin, and handling endocrine/metabolic conditions.
- Background in telemetry and stepdown-level care (PCU/DOU/IMC).
- Cardiovascular experience in pre/post cardiac catheterization settings.
Unit Details
- PCU nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 5:1.
- MS nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 6:1, may flex up to 7:1.
Scheduling & Policies
- Charting system: EPIC experience required.
- Call-off policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
- All requests for time off, block, or special scheduling must be submitted with application.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing.
- E-Verify or attestation required.
- 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, completed within 1 year of start.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals.
- Education verification of highest earned degree required.
- Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start.
- NURSYS verification required for RNs within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year; if positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire.
- Fit test for respirator masks within 1 year, updated annually (onsite fit testing possible).
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Seasonal flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form.
- Professional photo for badge (no selfies or filters).
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start.
- Completion of new hire paperwork and orientation materials as required.
- Two clinical references required.
- Updated skills checklist annually.
Required Licensure and Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia (state or compact).
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum of 1 year of recent Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience.
- Current ACLS certification from the American Heart Association.
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Skilled in central line care and tracheostomy management.
- Proficient in CPAP/BiPAP support and capable of managing chest tubes.
- Skilled in titrating cardiac drips and responding to emergencies via Rapid Response/Code teams.
- Capable of managing PCA and heparin protocols.
- Telemetry experience required.
- Experience in cardiac catheterization lab settings.
- Proficient with EPIC electronic charting system.
Experience Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse.
- Required years of experience: Minimum 1 year of recent PCU experience.
- Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted.
