Description

Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical (Neuro Unit)

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • Neuro unit with a focus on neurological patient care and general medicine
  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 6 patients
  • Shift: Nights (3 shifts of 12 hours each, 18:45 to 7:15)
  • Weekly hours: 36 (36 or 48 hours accepted)
  • Weekend requirement: 5-6 weekend shifts (approximately every other weekend)
  • Float requirement: Yes, travelers float first
  • Contract staff may be assigned to Storm Team/Hurricane Team and expected to work during catastrophic events or disasters

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with at least 1 year of recent Med Surg experience
  • Current ACLS certification
  • Current BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Preferred Qualifications

  • NIH Stroke Certification (annual completion preferred)
  • Neuro experience preferred
  • Experience or willingness to learn charge nurse role preferred

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 24 hours
  • Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Must complete color blindness testing within 1 year prior to start
  • Must complete facility-specific education modules and compliance training prior to start
  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates)
  • Must complete annual compliance and facility-specific mandatory education

Licensing & Certifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license for North Carolina required
  • Current ACLS and BLS certifications required
  • NIH Stroke Certification recommended
  • Other certifications (PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM) not required for this unit unless specified

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (within 30 days if past positive TB)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray per facility policy
  • Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) within 1 year prior to start; onsite fit testing available if needed
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
  • Required immunizations or titers with boosters as needed:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination form if titer negative/equivocal)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask-wearing requirement
  • Background checks including local, federal, national criminal, sex offender, and education verification

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Manager schedules shifts
  • No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation
  • Scrubs: Navy blue (not provided)
  • Must be able to work night shifts and float as needed

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must submit a passport-style photo on a white background for badge creation prior to start
  • Candidates will be assigned a corporate ID and must complete I-Learn login and training within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays
  • Contract staff may be consolidated or reassigned mid-contract as needed
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel acute care RNs
  • Employment application and skills checklist must be completed and uploaded prior to start
