Description

Registered Nurse – Stroke/Neuro PCU

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Night, primarily 3 shifts of 12 hours (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM); 4x12 shifts available by request
  • Hours per week: 48
  • Unit: Telemetry Progressive Care Unit (PCU) specializing in stroke and neurology patients
  • Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, staffing goal 1:4
  • Floating: Required within skillset
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Charting System: EPIC experience required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, and dysrhythmia interpretation/management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
  • Neuro PCU experience
  • Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, IMC, and stepdown units

Medications/IV Drips Managed

  • Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, Ketamine

Required Licensure

  • Active Virginia State RN license or Compact RN license required
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse with Neuro PCU experience
  • Prior travel experience preferred but not required; first-time travelers accepted

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required
  • NURSYS verification required for RN license within 30 days of start
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming free from communicable diseases
  • Fit test within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • TB questionnaire required for all candidates
  • Two clinical references required
  • Completion of employment application/resume and annual skills checklist

Additional Notes

  • Drivers license/state ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility required within 48 hours of signing
  • Locals accepted
  • Remote telemetry monitors remain on unit; tele-sitting implemented to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
  • Must comply with call-off policy: facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including Neuro PCU experience within the last year
  • ACLS certification from the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIHSS certification
  • Proficient in dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
