Description

Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Night shift (12-hour shifts, 18:45 – 07:15), 36 or 48 hours per week accepted
  • Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6
  • Assignment includes adults and geriatrics on a general medical/surgical unit with a daily census of ~43 patients
  • Possible care of COVID-19 patients
  • Traveler will be assigned to an Inclement Weather Team and may be required to work on Storm/Hurricane Teams during catastrophic events or disasters
  • Floating to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatient holding is required
  • Call required if assigned to a prescheduled call shift
  • Weekend work every other weekend and holiday work required
  • Charge nurse role preferred for night travelers

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of medical-surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification
  • Charge nurse experience

Unit & Patient Care Details

  • Patient diagnoses: General medical/surgical adult and geriatric patients
  • Special procedures include:
    • Heparin drips
    • Wound VAC dressing changes
    • High flow oxygen therapy
    • Occasional short-term BiPAP respiratory support (no additional training required)
  • No PCU-level patients on this unit
  • Unit systems: PYXIS (medication), EPIC (documentation), SBAR (communication)

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 24 hours
  • Must attend monthly unit team meetings (scheduled monthly with additional meetings for night shift staff)
  • Must complete facility-specific education modules and compliance training as required
  • Must complete medication safety training and other required facility-specific education prior to or shortly after start
  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates)

Compliance & Health Requirements

  • Background check required within 6 months of start
  • Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start (with exceptions for past positive TB)
  • Required immunizations or titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (facility-specific declination form if applicable)
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season; mask required if exempt
  • Physical exam not required for this crisis assignment
  • Must complete required competency exams including medication test/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Shift: 12-hour nights, 18:45 – 07:15
  • 13 to 26 weeks contract length accepted
  • Must be able to work holidays and every other weekend
  • Floating to similar units and alternate care locations required
  • Call required if assigned to call shifts
  • Assigned to Inclement Weather Team and may be required to report during storms or disasters

  • Scrubs: Navy color, not provided by facility
  • Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport-style photo on white background, business attire)
  • Must complete Corp ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays
  • Must sign confidentiality agreement and hospital policies acknowledgment forms
  • Radiation badge not required for this unit
