Description

Float Pool Registered Nurse (RN) - Medical Surgical

Job Type

  • Contractor
  • Contract length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 12-hour night shift (18:45–07:15)
  • Hours per week: 36
  • Weekend rotation: every other weekend
  • Holiday work: may be required up to 50% of holidays during contract
  • Schedule made 4-6 weeks in advance, with 2 weeks’ notice
  • No on-call required
  • Manager approval required for requests off (RTO)
  • Block scheduling may be considered but not guaranteed

Facility & Unit Information

  • Float Pool position covering multiple MedSurg units and hospital areas with MedSurg patients, including ER Holding/Boarding
  • Typical units floated to:
    • MS1 General Medical Surgical (including oncology patients receiving chemo, but no chemo administration required)
    • MS2 Ortho/Neuro
    • MS2 Cardiac (manager approval required if no cardiac post-procedure experience)
  • Patient types include general medical, surgical, orthopedic, neurological, and cardiac cases
  • Pediatric patients >1 year old present but no pediatric experience required; no pediatric patient assignments

Patient Ratios & Support

  • Day shift patient ratio: 1:4-6
  • Night shift patient ratio: 1:6
  • Support staff:
    • HUC available days only
    • CNA support with limited scope (vitals, blood glucose; no IV insertions/removals)
    • CNA ratios: Days 1:5-6, PM 1:6-7, Nights 1:10
    • Charge nurse assigns patients
    • Phlebotomy available for peripheral lab draws
    • Respiratory Therapist (RT) available 24/7
    • Hospitalist available 24/7 (communication via secure chat in EPIC)
    • OT, PT, Speech Therapy available weekdays, limited weekend hours
    • Telemetry tech available remotely; nurse may assist if short-staffed

Required Qualifications & Certifications

  • Minimum 2 years medical-surgical nursing experience
  • First-time travelers accepted (no prior travel experience required)
  • Required certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Skills & Experience

  • Proficient in:
    • Chest tube care
    • Stable tracheostomy management
    • IV skills including port/central line care
    • Foley catheter insertion and care
    • Feeding tube management
    • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
    • Use of CPAP/BiPAP/Airvo equipment (RT manages equipment)
  • Experience with titrating drips (Cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, argatroban) preferred; manager approval required if no drip experience
  • EPIC electronic medical record experience required

Equipment & Charting

  • EMR system: EPIC
  • IV pumps: Alaris
  • Medication dispensing: Pyxis

Orientation

  • One full shift for login access, paperwork, and EPIC setup
  • Remainder of first shift on assigned unit
  • One 12-hour shift unit orientation; manager selects unit(s) for orientation
  • Brief orientation provided for any new units floated to
