Description
Registered Nurse - Surgical Unit (Travel/Contract)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 - 7:15), 48 hours per week
Patient Ratio: 1:6 (floor for surgical/medicine inpatient patients)
Job Description
- Work on a combination acuity unit including adult medical surgical and surgical stepdown patients.
- Patient diagnoses include a wide range of surgical and trauma cases such as cellulitis, appendicitis, cholecystitis, diverticulitis, motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, stabbings, falls, cancers, kidney stones, bowel obstruction, peripheral vascular disease, limb ischemia, hernia, and gangrene.
- Special procedures and surgeries include cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hernia repair, TURP, ostomy creation/closure, wound debridement, tumor removal, kidney stone removal, amputations, and fem-pop bypass.
- Use of special equipment such as wound vacs, chest tubes, NG tube/Corpak, JP drains, hemovac drains, and penrose drains.
- Unit systems include Pyxis (medication), EPIC (documentation), and SBAR (communication).
- Float to like units as needed.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
- Contract staff may be required to work on Storm or Hurricane Teams and report during catastrophic events or disasters.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Skills and competencies:
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Central line care and management
- Non-invasive airway management
Preferred Skills
- Ability to titrate cardiac and vasoactive drips.
- Experience with chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac).
Orientation & Training
- 2 days hospital orientation plus 24 hours floor training.
- Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
- Required to complete facility-specific education modules and annual compliance training.
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation checklist (approx. 8-10 hours for acute care).
- Fit testing required (N95 mask or PAPR training if fit test failed).
- Must complete physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and annual updates required.
- Required immunizations and titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (with facility-specific declination if applicable).
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframes.
- Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen).
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Contract length: 13 weeks.
- 36 or 48 hours per week accepted; no overtime billed until after 48 hours if working 48-hour week.
- Maximum 7 days of Return to Office (RTO) allowed for auto offers; no RTO after booking or worked onsite. Excessive call-offs or RTO may lead to cancellation.
- Scrubs: All navy or navy bottoms with white top.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks including local, federal, national criminal, sex offender, and education verification required within specified timeframes.
- Employment application and professional references required.
- Must complete confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and other facility-specific documents prior to start.
- Must obtain and maintain a facility badge (photo required for badge creation).
- Must complete Corp ID and I-Learn account setup prior to start.
- Must complete medication safety training and other mandatory education modules.
Additional Notes
- Candidates may be preassigned to different units as needed during the contract.
- Candidates must be prepared to work in a fast-paced, trauma and surgical environment with diverse patient populations.
- Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
This position is ideal for experienced surgical RNs comfortable with telemetry, trauma, and surgical stepdown care, who are flexible and able to work nights with occasional floating and weekend requirements.
