Description
Job Opportunity: Labor & Delivery Nurse (L&D)
Position Details
- Employment Type: Contractor
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 12-hour Night Shift
- Hours per Week: 36
- Location: Milwaukee, WI (Level IV Trauma Center, Level III NICU, Level III Perinatal Center)
Unit Overview
- Level III Perinatal Care unit specializing in high-risk mothers and newborns
- Approximately 280 deliveries per month
- Teaching hospital environment with OBGYN residents, family practice doctors, and midwives
- Patient types include high-risk mothers/newborns with conditions such as placenta accreta, pre-eclampsia, and COVID
- No primary circulation for C-sections; assist as secondary nurse only
Patient Ratios
- Active Labor: 1:1-2
- Antepartum: 1:3
- Staffing follows AWHONN guidelines
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Labor & Delivery nursing
- Must have Level III Perinatal Care experience (experience with high-risk mothers/newborns is mandatory; no exceptions)
- Prior travel experience not accepted for first-time travelers (must have prior experience in this specialty)
Required Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring)
- OB Tech certifications: BLS, CST (Certified Surgical Technologist)
Skills & Responsibilities
- Fetal monitoring and maternal assessments/interventions
- Care for high-risk newborns and mothers post-delivery
- Perform cervical exams for labor progression and OB triage
- Assist with circulating C-sections (secondary nurse role)
- Primary nurse for vaginal deliveries
- Assist with procedures, postpartum care, and L&D recoveries
- OB Tech duties include scrubbing C-sections, drawing cord gases and blood, delivery and room setup, and Health Unit Coordinator tasks
Orientation & Training
- Day 1: Meet Nurse Manager for onboarding, unit training
- Day 2: Training with preceptor
- Day 3: Assigned a work buddy and own patient assignment
Floating Assignments
- Postpartum unit
- Women’s Care Center (inpatient non-pregnant women post-procedures)
- Travelers will float first before permanent staff
Scheduling & Work Expectations
- No fixed schedule; must be available 7 days a week
- Scheduling is flexible and based on unit needs
- Every other weekend and every other holiday work expected (based on start date)
- No on-call except for low census situations
COVID-19 & PPE
- COVID vaccine required
- Fit testing provided on-site
- Single-use PPE with CAPR/PAPR available
Support & Resources on Unit
- Charge nurse manages patient assignments
- Clinical Resource Nurse available
- Phlebotomy shared role with RN
- Onsite RT, house supervisor, certified nurse midwives, OBGYN providers, and OB anesthesia 24/7
Equipment & Charting Systems
- EPIC electronic health record
- Alaris infusion pumps
- Pyxis medication dispensing system
- Fetal monitoring and epidural pumps
