Description
Job Opportunity: Labor & Delivery Nurse (L&D)
Position Details
- Employment Type: Contractor
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 12-hour Night Shift
- Hours per Week: 36
Unit & Patient Population
- Labor & Delivery unit with 20 beds
- High-risk mothers and newborns
- Average of 280 deliveries per month
- Patient types include those requiring Level III Perinatal Care
- Care involves managing placenta accreta, tubal ligation, cerclage, hysterectomies, C-section assistance (secondary nurse role), vaginal deliveries (primary nurse role), surgical recovery, massive transfusions, pre-eclampsia, and COVID-related care
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Labor & Delivery nursing
- Must have Level III Perinatal Care experience (no exceptions)
- First-time travelers are not accepted; prior travel experience is required
- Required certifications:
- RN: BLS, NRP, FHM
- OB Tech: BLS, CST
Skills & Responsibilities
- Fetal monitoring and maternal assessments/interventions
- Care for high-risk newborns and mothers post-delivery
- Cervical exams to assess labor progression
- OB triage and assisting with circulating C-sections (secondary nurse)
- Primary nurse for vaginal deliveries
- Assisting with procedures and postpartum care, including L&D recoveries
- OB Tech duties include scrubbing C-sections, drawing cord gases and blood, stocking, delivery and room setup, and Health Unit Coordinator tasks
Staffing & Support
- Patient ratios:
- 1:1-2 for active labor
- 1:3 for antepartum
- Staffing follows AWHONN guidelines
- Support team includes charge nurse, clinical resource nurse, phlebotomy (shared with RN), respiratory therapists, house supervisor, certified nurse midwives, OBGYN providers, and OB anesthesia available 24/7
- Teaching hospital environment with OBGYN residents, family practice doctors, and midwives
Equipment & Systems
- Charting and equipment used:
- EPIC electronic health record system
- Alaris infusion pumps
- Pyxis medication dispensing system
- Fetal monitoring equipment
- Epidural pumps
Orientation & Training
- Day 1: Meet nurse manager for onboarding, unit training
- Day 2: Training with preceptor
- Day 3: Assigned a work buddy and own patient assignment
Floating Assignments
- Postpartum unit
- Women’s Care Center (inpatient non-pregnant women post-procedures)
- Travelers will float first before permanent assignments
Scheduling & Work Expectations
- No fixed schedule; must be available 7 days a week
- Scheduling is flexible and based on unit needs; block or patterned scheduling not guaranteed but attempted
- Every other weekend work expected
- Holiday work expected every other holiday, depending on start date
- No on-call except for low census situations where call-back may occur

- Single-use PPE provided; CAPR/PAPR available
