Description
Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Shift: Night (3 shifts of 12 hours each, 18:45–7:15)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Job Description
- Patient population includes severe injuries to bones, joints, soft tissue, traumatic brain injuries, spine injuries, neurological trauma/nerve damage, and subdural hematoma.
- Unit systems used: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR.
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6-7 (must be comfortable with this ratio).
- Floating required to similar units and alternate care locations including inpatient holding.
- Weekend assignment: every other weekend.
- Contract staff may be assigned to Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty, or disaster.
- Orientation includes 12-hour unit orientation and 16 hours of organizational education.
- Scrubs color: Navy.
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.
Required Skills and Experience
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with at least 1 year within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Experience managing patient-controlled analgesia (PCA).
- Colostomy care.
- Phlebotomy skills.
- PICC line management.
- Management of dysrhythmias.
- Non-invasive airway management.
- Tracheostomy management.
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system.
Preferred Skills and Certifications
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Interpretation of dysrhythmias
- Pre/Post hemodialysis management
- Management of drips
- Care for cerebrovascular accident (CVA) patients
- Pre/Post neurosurgery care
- Spinal cord injury management
Work Details
- Shift length options: 36 or 48 hours per week (if 48 hours, overtime billed only after 48 hours).
- Return to Office (RTO) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation.
- Maximum 7 days allowed for auto-offer acceptance.
- Must be comfortable with night shift and patient acuity.
- May be consolidated to centralized office mid-contract and preassigned to units as needed.
Required Documentation and Compliance
- Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates.
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, additional documentation required.
- Immunizations and titers required: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Physical exam required per travel agency standards (not client-mandated).
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season; exemptions require mask-wearing.
- Medication safety training certificate required.
- Competency exams including Dysrhythmia/EKG competency (must score 82% or higher; remediation process in place).
- Color blindness testing within 1 year.
- Skills checklist or equivalent competency verification.
- References required for new contracts.
- Performance evaluation required if worked with agency over 1 year.
- Various facility-specific education and compliance trainings required prior to or during assignment.
- Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport style, white background, business attire).

- Must complete all required certifications and competencies prior to start.
- Floating to similar units and inpatient holding areas expected.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment with complex patient needs.
- Night shift requires adaptability to working overnight hours consistently.
- Contract staff may be required to respond to emergency situations such as storms or disasters.
This position is ideal for RNs with solid medical-surgical experience who are comfortable with telemetry-level patient care, complex line management, and working night shifts in a high-acuity trauma and surgical environment.
