Description

Float Pool Registered Nurse (RN) - Medical Surgical

Job Type

  • Contractor (Travel Nurse)
  • Contract length: 13 weeks

Specialty & Experience

  • Specialty: Medical-Surgical Nursing (Float Pool)
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience required
  • First-time travelers are welcome (no prior travel experience required)

Patient Population & Units

  • Float to various MedSurg units and anywhere in the hospital with MedSurg patients, including ER Holding/Boarding
  • Units include:
    • MS1 General Medical Surgical: oncology (no chemo administration), surgical (gallbladder, appendectomies, colectomies, ostomies, TURPs), general medical (cellulitis, GI bleeds, CHF, COPD), outpatient infusions (antibiotics/fluids)
    • MS2 Ortho/Neuro: ortho (total hips, knees, shoulders), neuro (spine surgeries, strokes, altered mental status, TIA vs. stroke observation), observation (chest pain, dizziness, syncope)
    • MS2 Cardiac: post-procedure cardiac care (cath, TEE, cardioversion - manager approval required if no experience), general cardiac (heart failure, chest pain, arrhythmias)

Patient Ratios

  • Day shift: 1 nurse to 4-6 patients
  • Night shift: 1 nurse to 6 patients

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Skills

  • Chest tube care, stable tracheostomy management
  • IV skills including port/central line care
  • Knowledge of CPAP/BiPAP/Airvo equipment (respiratory therapists manage equipment)
  • Foley catheter insertion and care
  • Feeding tube care
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • Titrating drips: Cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, argatroban (manager approval required if no prior drip experience)
  • Experience with EPIC electronic medical record system required

Support on Unit

  • Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) available days only
  • Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) assist with vitals and blood glucose (no IV insertions/removals)
  • Charge nurse manages patient assignments
  • Phlebotomy available for peripheral lab draws
  • Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
  • Hospitalist available 24/7 (communication via secure EPIC chat)
  • Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy available weekdays with limited weekend hours
  • Remote telemetry monitoring with Tele tech; nurse may be asked to monitor patients if Tele techs are short

Equipment & Charting

  • EMR: EPIC (experience required)
  • IV Pumps: Alaris
  • Medication Dispensing: Pyxis

Orientation

  • One full shift for login access, paperwork, and EPIC setup
  • Remainder of first shift on assigned unit
  • One 12-hour shift unit orientation; manager selects unit(s) for orientation
  • Brief orientation provided for any new units floated to

Scheduling & Shifts

  • 12-hour shifts: 0645-1915 (day), 1845-0715 (night)
  • 36 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation every other weekend
  • Schedule released 4-6 weeks in advance, with 2 weeks’ notice
  • Block scheduling may be considered but not guaranteed
  • Requests for time off require manager approval
  • No on-call duties
  • May be required to work up to 50% of holidays during contract
