Description
Registered Nurse – Neuro PCU
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: Up to 26 weeks
Schedule & Shift Details
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Call-off Policy: Allowed 1 call-off shift per 2 weeks
- Blocked scheduling accommodated
- Floating required within clinical skillset
Unit & Patient Population
- Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 4–5 patients (confirm comfort with 1:5 ratio)
- Adult patients with neurological conditions
- Includes 5 beds for continuous 24-hour epilepsy monitoring
- Care involves neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, neuro-specific diagnoses, and medical overflow
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, preferably Neuro PCU
- PCU experience within the last year required
- Certifications: ACLS, BLS issued by American Heart Association, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
- Medication administration, cardiac drips (no titration)
- Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
- Rapid Response and isolation precautions
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required
- Immunizations or positive titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually (specific mask types accepted)
- Background check covering 7 years of history, education verification, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG checks required
- Primary source verification of state license and NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start
- Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
- Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance documents prior to start
- Orientation manual review required (not mandatory for inpatient RNs)

- Local candidates accepted within radius rules (must provide valid driver’s license/state ID with address within 100 miles of facility)

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neuro progressive care unit with a focus on neurological patient care and advanced monitoring in a Level I Trauma Center environment.
