Description

Registered Nurse – Neuro PCU

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: Up to 26 weeks


Schedule & Shift Details

  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Call-off Policy: Allowed 1 call-off shift per 2 weeks
  • Blocked scheduling accommodated
  • Floating required within clinical skillset

Unit & Patient Population

  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 4–5 patients (confirm comfort with 1:5 ratio)
  • Adult patients with neurological conditions
  • Includes 5 beds for continuous 24-hour epilepsy monitoring
  • Care involves neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, neuro-specific diagnoses, and medical overflow

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, preferably Neuro PCU
  • PCU experience within the last year required
  • Certifications: ACLS, BLS issued by American Heart Association, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration, cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
  • Rapid Response and isolation precautions

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required
  • Immunizations or positive titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Fit test within 1 year, updated annually (specific mask types accepted)
  • Background check covering 7 years of history, education verification, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG checks required
  • Primary source verification of state license and NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start
  • Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
  • Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance documents prior to start
  • Orientation manual review required (not mandatory for inpatient RNs)

Additional Notes

  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Local candidates accepted within radius rules (must provide valid driver’s license/state ID with address within 100 miles of facility)
  • Must submit all scheduling requests with application

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neuro progressive care unit with a focus on neurological patient care and advanced monitoring in a Level I Trauma Center environment.
