Description
Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)
Location: Carmel, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Unit: 31-bed med-surgical unit focused on general surgery, urology, gynecology, and bariatric surgery
- Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
- Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 6 patients
- Floating: Required
- Experience: Minimum 2 years in nursing, with demonstrated skills in bariatric surgery, thyroidectomy, bowel obstruction, continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
- First-time travel nurses accepted
- Local candidates not accepted
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Experience with voiding trials
- Experience in urogynecologic (urogyn) surgery
- Bariatric surgery experience
- Thyroidectomy experience
- Bowel obstruction experience
- Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) experience
Certifications (may be required depending on unit)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Chemotherapy certification
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Note: Verify specific certification requirements per unit
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Background checks including 7-year history, criminal, sex offender, and federal databases (must be current within 90 days)
- Education verification and official transcript/diploma
- State license verification within 30 days of start
- Physical exam completed within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months (N95 or approved respirators)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tuberculosis test (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations accepted)
- Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations accepted)
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap strongly recommended
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31)
- TB questionnaire updated annually
- Color blindness exam (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score
- Skills checklist within 12 months and annually thereafter
- Minimum 2 professional references from recent employment with supervisory titles
Additional Notes
- Candidates must complete facility-specific orientation packets and compliance checklists prior to start
- Self-study orientation and test required before start
- On-site fit testing available only with prior approval and limited locations
- Prior travel experience is not required for this position
This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized med-surg environment with a focus on surgical and urologic patient care, ideal for RNs with at least 2 years of experience seeking a travel contract in Indiana.
