Job Opportunity: Labor & Delivery Nurse (L&D)

Position Details

  • Employment Type: Contractor
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 12-hour Day Shift
  • Hours per Week: 36
  • Location: Milwaukee, WI (general area, no facility name provided)
  • Patient Population: High-risk mothers and newborns

Job Description

  • Provide and coordinate comprehensive patient care through the nursing process.
  • Deliver safe, therapeutic care using evidence-based practice, clinical decision-making, compassion, and skilled communication.
  • Lead efforts to create the safest patient environment and best patient experience.
  • Care for high-risk mothers/newborns including those with placenta accreta, tubal ligation, cerclage, hysterectomies.
  • Assist as secondary nurse for C-section deliveries; primary nurse for vaginal deliveries.
  • Circulate in vaginal deliveries and assist with procedures.
  • Manage surgical recovery, newborn care, massive transfusions, pre-eclampsia, and COVID-related care.
  • No primary circulation for C-sections allowed.

Patient Ratios

  • Active Labor: 1:1-2
  • Antepartum: 1:3
  • Staffing follows AWHONN guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years nursing experience.
  • Specialty Experience: Must have Level III Perinatal Care experience; experience with high-risk mothers and newborns is mandatory (no exceptions).
  • Certifications:
    • RN: BLS, NRP, FHM
    • OB Tech: BLS, CST
  • Licensure: Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required (first-time travelers not accepted).

Skills & Competencies

  • Fetal monitoring and maternal assessments/interventions.
  • High-risk newborns/mothers post-delivery care.
  • Cervical exams for labor progression.
  • OB triage.
  • Assist with circulating C-sections and post-partum care.
  • L&D recoveries.
  • OB Tech skills include scrubbing C-sections, drawing cord gases and blood, delivery and room setup, and Health Unit Coordinator tasks.

Unit Support & Team

  • Charge nurse manages patient assignments.
  • Clinical Resource Nurse available.
  • Phlebotomy shared role with RN.
  • Onsite support includes respiratory therapists, house supervisors, certified nurse midwives, OBGYN providers, and OB anesthesia 24/7.

Equipment & Systems

  • EPIC electronic charting system.
  • Alaris infusion pumps.
  • Pyxis medication dispensing system.
  • Fetal monitoring equipment.
  • Epidural pumps.

Floating Assignments

  • Postpartum unit.
  • Women’s Care Center (inpatient unit for non-pregnant women who have had procedures).
  • Travelers will float first.

Orientation

  • Day 1: Meet with Nurse Manager for onboarding, unit training.
  • Day 2: Training with preceptor.
  • Day 3: Assigned a work buddy and own patient assignment.

Scheduling & Work Expectations

  • No set schedules; must be available to work 7 days a week.
  • Scheduling is flexible and based on unit needs.
  • Every other weekend off; block scheduling and patterned scheduling not guaranteed but attempted.
  • Holiday work expected every other holiday based on start date.

COVID-19 & PPE

  • COVID vaccine required.
  • Fit testing provided at facility.
  • Single-use PPE provided.
  • CAPR/PAPR respirators available.

Additional Information

  • Scrub color provided.
  • Free designated parking available.
