Description
Surgical Assistant (RN) - Contract Position
Location
- Milwaukee, WI
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Shift and Hours
- 8-hour day shift
- 40 hours per week
- Variable start times between 5:30 AM and 7:00 AM
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
- Not recommended for first-time travelers; requires further approval/evaluation
Patient Population and Common Procedures
- Neuro/ENT Surgeries:
- Spine surgeries: laminectomies, ALIFs, fusions, dissections
- Cranial surgeries: tumors, AVMs/aneurysms (not required), VP shunts, subdural, EVDs (no setup required)
- ENT: neck dissections with flaps, sinus surgeries (Stealth Navigation), basic ENT (tonsils), tympanoplasty, cochlear (not required)
- Navigation systems: Medtronic (cranial and spine), Medtronic Stealth (ENT), Stryker and Synaptive (cranial)
- Orthopedic Surgeries:
- Fractures, anterior hips, total knees, posterior hips, ortho spine (laminectomy, ALIFs, PLIFs, discectomies), hand, bone/soft tissue sarcomas, foot/ankle, total shoulders, arthroscopy (shoulder, knee, ankle, wrist)
- Equipment/Tables: Hana Table, Jackson Table (open/flat top), Beach Chair (T-Max, Arthrex, Schlein)
- Positioning equipment: Stulberg hip, spider arm, hip grip, Trimano, Arthrex shoulder traction, peg board, arm boards, Acufex leg holder
- Specialty equipment: Velys robot
- General Surgeries:
- Breasts, plastic, vascular, laparoscopic, general oncology, genitourinary (GU), gynecology (GYN), DaVinci XI robot (agency not trained on robots unless strong background and contract longer than one term)
Licensure and Certifications
- Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) from one of the following:
- National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
- American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA)
- National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
Orientation
- 1 to 1.5 weeks, depending on team and shift
Department Support
- Charge RN
- Leads
- Supervisors (AM, PM, weekends)

Technology and Equipment
- EMR: EPIC
- IV Pump: Alaris
- Medication dispensing: Pyxis
Floating
- Cross-trained to General Main OR specialty regardless of hiring position
- Cross-trained to Urology Center
- No floating to other hospitals or sites
Scheduling and On-Call
- On-call required with a 30-minute response time
- 8-week call schedule (subject to change)
- Call details:
- General/Neuro: AM/PM shifts, 10 End of Shift (EOS) call slots, 1-2 weekends on call depending on specialty
- Orthopedic: 1 weekday call day (Monday-Friday) until 7:00 AM, 1 call weekend every 5 weeks or as needed
- Weekend rotation: Not applicable
- Holiday shifts: Option to work four 10-hour shifts during holiday weeks or take holiday unpaid
Additional Information
- Surgical scrubs provided; scrub caps allowed but must be covered by a surgical bouffant
- Free parking with shuttle service to/from parking structure
- Onsite food options include Starbucks and cafeteria
This position is ideal for experienced surgical assistants with a strong background in neuro, ENT, orthopedic, and general surgery cases who are comfortable with on-call responsibilities and working in a high-acuity surgical environment.
