Registered Nurse – MICU (Charlottesville, Virginia)
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day (4x12 hours), 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
Hours per Week: 48
Patient Ratio: 1:2
Job Description
- Care for MICU patients primarily with multi-system failure and co-morbid conditions such as sepsis, pneumonia, GI bleed, and organ failure.
- Work in a newly opened 28-bed ICU split across two units (16 beds on MICU3 and 12 beds on MICU4).
- Schedule includes every other weekend and every other holiday.
- Time off: 40 hours can be approved; no back-to-back weekends off; no time off around Labor Day.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia (VA license pending submissions accepted).
- Minimum 1 year of recent experience in Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU).
- Current ACLS certification.
- Current BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated every 30 days.
- Education verification required; BSN preferred, ASN required if no BSN. Official transcripts acceptable; photocopies of diplomas are not.
- Fingerprinting (Virginia State Police) may be required depending on unit; must be completed prior to start if applicable.
- Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check required only for Behavioral Health or specific units.
Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA or ARC accepted.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA or ARC accepted.
- Other certifications such as PALS, NRP, TNCC, CHEMO, NIH Stroke, and EFM may be required or preferred depending on unit but are not specified as mandatory for this role.
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months prior to start attesting ability to meet job demands.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (Tdap after age 11, no exemptions allowed).
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray: 2-step PPD within 1 year and 90 days of start or Qgold within 12 months (Tspot not accepted). Chest X-ray required if positive PPD or Qgold.
- Annual TB questionnaire if past positive.
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; no declinations or exemptions accepted for measles.
- Hepatitis B: Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required; if low/negative, Hep B Antigen titer also required. Declinations or exemptions not accepted.
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required; declination required if titer negative.
- Seasonal flu vaccination required annually during flu season (no exemptions or declinations accepted).
Drug Testing
- 10-panel drug screen required within 2 months of start and updated annually.
- Must include marijuana (cannabinoids) and fentanyl panels. Instant tests not accepted.
Additional Requirements
- Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations.
- Completion of skills checklist and competency exams as applicable, updated annually.
- Pass/fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions.
- Professional appearance guidelines must be reviewed and acknowledged.
- Fit testing required for patient-facing clinical roles, completed onsite if needed.
- Various facility-specific forms and compliance documents must be completed prior to start.
Scheduling Notes
- 36 or 48 hours per week options available.
- Every other weekend and holiday schedule.
- Time off restrictions apply (no back-to-back weekends off, no time off around Labor Day).
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity MICU environment with a focus on complex critical care patients, requiring strong clinical skills, certifications, and compliance with detailed facility and state requirements.
