Job Opportunity: Surgical Room Nurse (RN)

Position Details

• Employment Type: Contractor
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: 8-hour day shift

• 938 beds total, with 8 beds in Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR)
• Located in Milwaukee, WI

Patient and Case Information

• Average 10 cases per day
• Patient types include:

  • Cardiac and thoracic surgeries such as CABG, TAVR, valve replacements
  • Robotic thoracic cases (lobectomy, hernia repair)
  • Generator exchanges, lead extractions
  • Heart transplants
  • Femoral-popliteal bypass
• Surgical team always includes two RNs per case (circulator and med RN); travelers will circulate only
• Patient ratio: 1:1

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Wisconsin
• Minimum 2 years of CVOR experience, with CVOR experience within the last year
• BLS certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Skills and Competencies

• Proficient in robotic surgery assistance
• Ability to manage cases including CABG, TAVR, valve replacements, robotic thoracic surgeries, and advanced cardiac procedures
• Must document pain levels before and after medication administration according to protocol

Orientation and Support

• 2 weeks of orientation provided
• Support available from department supervisor, manager, team lead, surgical assistant lead, anesthesia (24/7), and house supervisor (24/7)
• Weekend support through a small weekend program with shared supervisor and staff

Scheduling and On-Call

• Start times:

  • RN: 5:00 AM to 6:30 AM
• Weekend rotation: on-call only
• On-call expectations:

  • Once per month weekend 24-hour call (Saturday 7:00 AM to Sunday 7:00 AM)
  • Up to once per week end-of-shift call with 30-minute response time
  • No sleep room available during on-call
• Holiday coverage is on-call only, as needed
• Fatigue policy limits work to no more than 60 hours per week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts

Technology and Equipment

• EPIC charting system (required for RN roles)
• Alaris infusion pumps
• Pyxis medication dispensing system
• Da Vinci XI robotic surgical system

• Floating: None for RN; Anesthesia Tech floats between CVOR, Main OR, and Cath Lab (not applicable for RN role)
