Description

Registered Nurse – Neuro PCU

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Schedule & Shift Details

  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
  • Call-off Policy: Allowed 1 call-off shift per 2 weeks
  • Blocked scheduling requests accommodated

Unit & Patient Population

  • Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 4–5 patients (travelers must be comfortable with up to 1:5)
  • Patient Population: Adult neurological patients including neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, neuro-specific diagnoses, and medical overflow
  • Includes 5 beds dedicated to continuous 24-hour epilepsy monitoring
  • Floating: Required to float to units within clinical skillset

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA only
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration, cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
  • Rapid Response and isolation precautions

Licensure Requirements

  • Active Virginia RN license or Compact RN license required
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state

Experience

  • Accepts first-time travel nurses (no prior travel experience required)

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • Drivers License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing
  • Background Check: 7-year history required within 1 year of start, including education verification and multiple federal/state checks
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required for RNs within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Fit test for mask within 1 year, updated annually (onsite fit testing possible)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination or signed declination form required during flu season
  • Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
  • Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance documents prior to start
  • Two clinical references required
  • Skills checklist updated annually

Electronic Health Record

  • EPIC experience required for charting

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, specifically Neuro PCU experience within the last year
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system

Additional Notes

  • Traveler must be comfortable with neurological patient care and the specified patient ratio
  • Floating to other units within clinical skillset is expected
  • Radius rule applies for local candidates (within 100 miles)

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neuro progressive care unit with a focus on neurological and neurosurgical patient populations in a Level I Trauma Center environment.
