Description
Critical Care Nurse – CVICU
Job Type
- Contractor
- Contract length: 13 weeks
Unit Information
- ICU unit with 30 beds
- Patient ratio:
- RN: 1:1 for critical patients, 1:2 for regular ICU, 1:3 mixed status
- Tech: 1:8-10
Patient Population
- Cardiac post-op patients including CABG, TAVR/TMVR, valve repairs/replacement, heart transplants, pacemakers (epicardial, transvenous)
- Thoracic surgery post-op: esophagectomy, pneumonectomy, lobectomy
- Vascular post-op: AAA, TVAR, carotid endarterectomy
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Wisconsin
- Minimum 1 year CVICU experience within the last year
- BLS certification
- ACLS certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Experience with Epic electronic medical record system
Skills and Competencies
- Proficient in invasive line monitoring (Swan Ganz, arterial lines)
- Experience with pacemakers (epicardial, transvenous), chest tubes, cardiac medications (inotropes, vasopressors, sedation/paralytics)
- Ventilator and tracheostomy management
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation
- RN responsibility includes drawing blood from invasive lines (no peripheral sticks)
- Preferred experience with ECMO, CVVH, IABP, VAD
Support and Resources
- Charge nurse support, typically without patient assignment
- 24/7 Health Unit Coordinator (HUC)
- Dedicated CVICU Intensivist available 24/7
- Cardiothoracic surgeon on call 24/7
- Hospitalist and general intensivist onsite 24/7
- ICU-designated respiratory therapist available 24/7
- Bedside and nurse station telemetry monitoring (no tele tech)
- Phlebotomy support for peripheral blood draws
Technology and Equipment
- EMR: EPIC
- IV pumps: Alaris
- Medication dispensing: Pyxis
- Patient monitors: GE
Floating Assignments
- ED Holding (board patients waiting for inpatient beds)
- Other ICUs: Medical, Surgical, Cardiac, Neuro ICU
- Medical Step-Down Unit (ratio 1:3)
- Sitter duties
- PACU surge support
Orientation
- 1 day total orientation
- 2-4 hours New Employee Orientation with supervisor/nurse educator
- Unit preceptor assignment following orientation
Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation every third weekend
- Holiday shifts: 1-2 per contract
- No on-call required
- Schedule cycle: 6 weeks, schedule provided 1-2 weeks in advance
- Fatigue policy: maximum 60 hours per week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts
