Critical Care Nurse – CVICU

Unit Information
- CVICU with 30 beds
- Level II Trauma Center, Level III NICU, Magnet Designated, Comprehensive Stroke Center
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
- Cardiac: Immediate post-op CABG, TAVR/TMVR, valve repairs/replacement, heart transplants, pacemakers (epicardial, transvenous)
- Thoracic surgeries: Fresh post-op esophagectomy, pneumonectomy, lobectomy
- Vascular: Fresh post-op AAA, TVAR, carotid endarterectomy
Patient Ratios
- RN: 1:1 (critical), 1:2 (regular ICU), 1:3 (mixed status)
- Tech: 1:8-10
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Wisconsin
- Minimum 1 year CVICU experience within the last year
- ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- BLS and ACLS certification
- Competency in invasive line monitoring (Swan Ganz, arterial lines)
- Pacemaker management (epicardial, transvenous)
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation
- Experience with Epic EMR system
Prior Travel Experience
- First-time travelers accepted if above experience criteria are met
Orientation
- 1 day total orientation
- 2-4 hours with supervisor/nurse educator
- Followed by unit preceptor assignment
Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: 0700-1900 or 1900-0700
- 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation every third weekend
- Holiday shifts: 1-2 per contract
- No on-call required
- Schedule provided 1-2 weeks in advance on a 6-week cycle
- Fatigue policy: max 60 hours/week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts
Floating Assignments
- ED Holding (board patients waiting for inpatient beds)
- Other ICUs: MRICU, SICU, CICU, Neuro ICU
- MSU (1:3 ratio)
- Sitter duties
- PACU surge support

- Charge nurse available, rarely assigned patients
- HUC available 24/7
- Dedicated CVICU Intensivist 24/7
- CT Surgeon on call 24/7
- Hospitalist onsite 24/7
- General Intensivist 24/7
- ICU-designated Respiratory Therapist 24/7
- Bedside and nurse station telemetry monitoring (no tele tech)
- Phlebotomy assists with peripheral blood draws

- EMR: EPIC
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Medication dispensing: Pyxis
- Monitors: GE
