Unit Information

  • ICU unit with 14 beds
  • Patient ratio typically 1:1 to 1:3
  • If assigned more than 2 patients, team nursing model applies with an experienced MedSurg RN assisting
  • Long-term ventilated patients managed by ICU RN for vent care, MedSurg RN manages patient care

Patient Types / Common Diagnoses

  • General/Medical: sepsis, pneumonia, COVID, COPD, respiratory failure, kidney failure, liver failure, GI bleeds, DKA
  • Cardiac: CHF, STEMI/NSTEMI, post-cardiac catheterization (radial and femoral approach)
  • Trauma: gunshot wounds, stabbings, falls
  • Surgical: gynecological, gastrointestinal (small bowel obstruction), genitourinary
  • Neurological: subdural hematoma, traumatic brain injury, stroke, transient ischemic attack, syncope
  • No cardiovascular surgeries

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Wisconsin
  • Minimum 2 years ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, with ICU experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • BLS, ACLS, NIHSS certifications required
  • Experience with Epic EMR

Skills Required

  • Ventilator and tracheostomy management
  • Tube and drain management, including chest tubes
  • Invasive line management (arterial line, central venous pressure line)
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation (reading and measuring strips)
  • Surgical recovery care
  • Medication titration including sedation, pressors, cardiac meds, pain control, paralytics
  • Preferred skills: abdominal pressure monitoring, external ventricular drains (EVDs), continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)

Support and Resources

  • Charge RN usually takes patient assignment
  • 1-2 CNAs per shift
  • Bedside and centralized telemetry monitoring
  • Hospital Unit Coordinator (HUC) on day shift
  • “Break Buddy” system in place
  • Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
  • Hospitalists and Intensivist coverage 24/7
  • Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy available during the day

Technology and Equipment

  • EMR: EPIC (required)
  • IV Pumps: Alaris
  • Medication dispensing: Pyxis
  • Unit-specific monitoring equipment

Floating

  • May float anywhere in the hospital within scope of practice
  • Floating to MedSurg/Telemetry units or ED Boarding with MedSurg patients involves a 1:4 patient ratio
  • Travelers float first

Orientation

  • 2-day orientation:
    • Day 1: Meet Clinical Education for access, login, badge; unit training
    • Day 2: 12-hour unit training with preceptor

Scheduling

  • 12-hour shifts: 0700-1900 and 1900-0700
  • 36 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation every other weekend
  • No on-call required
  • One holiday per contract
  • Requests for time off can be approved up to 7 days in advance
  • Schedule made in 6-week increments

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color: Any solid color, professional; no graphics, logos, or designs allowed
  • Free parking available in designated employee areas

Prior Travel Experience

  • First-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience not required)
