Description

Critical Care Nurse (ICU 2nd Floor) - Contract Position

Job Details

  • Employment Type: Contractor
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 12-hour night shifts (0700-1900 or 1900-0700)
  • Hours per Week: 36
  • Schedule Cycle: Made in 6-week increments
  • Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Expectation: 1 holiday per contract
  • On Call: None
  • Scrub Code: Any solid color, professional; no graphics, logos, or designs
  • Parking: Free in designated employee areas

Unit & Facility Information

  • Unit Beds: 14
  • Facility Type: Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center
  • Patient Ratios: 1:1 to 1:3; if more than 2 patients, team nursing with experienced MedSurg RN applies
  • Floating: May float anywhere in hospital within scope of practice; MedSurg/Telemetry or ED Boarding with MedSurg patients at 1:4 ratio; travelers float first

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • General/Medical: Sepsis, pneumonia, COVID-19, COPD, respiratory failure, kidney failure, liver failure, GI bleeds, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Cardiac: Congestive heart failure (CHF), STEMI/NSTEMI, post-cardiac catheterization (radial and femoral)
  • Trauma: Gunshot wounds, stabbings, falls
  • Surgical: Gynecological, gastrointestinal (small bowel obstruction), genitourinary
  • Neurological: Subdural hematoma, traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular accident, transient ischemic attack, syncope
  • Note: No cardiovascular surgeries

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
  • Ventilator and tracheostomy management
  • Tube and drain management, including chest tubes
  • Invasive line management (arterial line, central venous pressure line)
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation and measurement (read and measure strips)
  • Medication titration (sedation, pressors, cardiac medications, pain control, paralytics, etc.)
  • Experience with Epic electronic medical record system

Skills & Competencies

  • Ventilator and tracheostomy management
  • Tube and drain management, including chest tubes
  • Invasive line management (arterial line, central venous pressure line)
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation and measurement
  • Surgical recovery care
  • Medication titration (sedation, pressors, cardiac meds, pain control, paralytics)
  • EPIC electronic medical record system experience required
  • Preferred skills: abdominal pressure monitoring, external ventricular drains (EVDs), continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)

Support & Resources

  • Charge RN typically takes patient assignment
  • 1-2 Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) per shift
  • Bedside and centralized telemetry monitoring
  • Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) on day shift
  • “Break Buddy” system in place
  • Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
  • Hospitalists and Intensivists available 24/7
  • Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy available during the day

Orientation

  • 2-day orientation:
    • Day 1: Meet Clinical Education for access, login, badge; unit training
    • Day 2: 12-hour unit training with preceptor
