Job Opportunity: Med Surg Nurse (IU 2nd Floor)

Position Details

• Employment Type: Contractor
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: 12-hour night shift (19:00–07:30)
• Hours per Week: 36
• Unit Beds: 28 (average daily census 20-22 patients)
• Patient Population: Mostly geriatric patients with cardiac, neurological, respiratory, kidney, liver, and GI issues

Patient Diagnoses Commonly Seen

• Cardiac: CHF, chest pain observation (no Cath Lab on site; transfers if needed)
• Neurological: seizure observation, stroke/TIA rule out, altered mental status
• General Medical: COPD, respiratory, kidney, liver, and GI conditions

Patient Ratios

• RN Day Shift: 1:4-5
• RN Night Shift: 1:6-7 (can go up to 1:8, but uncommon)
• CNA Day Shift: 1:5-6
• CNA Night Shift: 1:7-8

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Wisconsin
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 1 year Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
• BLS certification
• NIHSS certification

Skills and Competencies

• Experience managing:

  • NG tube placement/management
  • Foley catheter placement/management
  • Chest tube management
  • Pleurex and other drains
  • Wound care
  • Central line/ports/midline blood draws
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• Ability to titrate drips within set parameters (Cardizem, amiodarone, heparin, Lasix, insulin)

Support and Resources

• Charge RN with reduced patient assignment
• Health Unit Coordinator available until 23:00
• Phlebotomy support for peripheral lab draws
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7
• OT/PT/ST available during the day
• Centralized telemetry monitoring with tele techs and central monitor at nurse’s station

Technology and Equipment

• EMR system: EPIC
• IV Pumps: Alaris
• Medication dispensing: Pyxis
• Patient lifts including ceiling lifts

Floating

• May float to other MedSurg units or hospital areas with MedSurg patients (ER hold, ICU, etc.)
• Will only take MedSurg patient assignments

Orientation

• New Employee Orientation (NEO)
• One 12-hour shift on the unit to learn workflow

Scheduling and Time Off

• Weekend rotation: every other weekend
• On-call: possible low census call up to 36 hours per contract
• Holiday coverage: expected to work 50% of holidays during contract
• Shift times: 07:00–19:30 (day), 19:00–07:30 (night)
• Schedule released in 6-week increments, about 3 weeks prior to start
• Requests for time off require manager approval
