Job Opportunity: Med Surg Nurse (Medical-Surgical Unit)

Position Details

• Employment Type: Contractor
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: 12-hour night shift (19:00–07:30)
• Hours per Week: 36
• Unit Beds: 28
• Average Patient Census: 20-22 patients per day
• Patient Population: Mostly geriatric patients

Patient Diagnoses and Care Focus

• Cardiac: Congestive heart failure (CHF), chest pain observation (no cath lab on site; transfers if needed)
• Neurological: Seizure observation, stroke observation, transient ischemic attack (TIA) vs. stroke rule out, altered mental status
• General Medical: COPD, respiratory, kidney, liver, and gastrointestinal issues

Patient Ratios

• RN Day Shift: 1:4-5
• RN Night Shift: 1:6-7 (can go up to 1:8, but uncommon)

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Wisconsin
• Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical or Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• BLS certification
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Skills and Clinical Competencies

• Experience managing listed patient types and conditions
• Proficient in:

  • NG tube placement and management
  • Foley catheter placement and management
  • Chest tube management
  • Pleurex and other drains
  • Wound care
  • Central line, ports, and midline blood draws
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• Medication drips (titration within set parameters): Cardizem, amiodarone, heparin, Lasix, insulin

Support and Resources

• Charge RN with reduced patient assignment available
• Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) coverage until 23:00
• Phlebotomy support for peripheral lab draws
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7
• Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy available during the day
• Centralized telemetry monitoring with tele techs and central monitor at nurse’s station

Technology and Equipment

• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): EPIC
• IV Pumps: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
• Patient lifts including ceiling lifts

Floating and Orientation

• Floating: May float to other Medical-Surgical units or hospital areas with MedSurg patients (e.g., ER hold, ICU) but only assigned MedSurg patients
• Orientation: New Employee Orientation (NEO) plus one 12-hour shift on unit to learn workflow

Scheduling and Work Expectations

• Weekend rotation: Every other weekend
• On-call: Possible low census call up to 36 hours per contract
• Holiday coverage: Expected to work 50% of holidays during contract
• Schedule cycle: Created in 6-week increments, released about 3 weeks prior
• Request time off (RTO) approval through manager
