Unit Information

• Unit beds: 33
• Average daily census: 24-26 patients
• Patient population: Mostly geriatric
• Common diagnoses:

  • Post-op Orthopedics (total hips, total knees)
  • Post-op Urology (TURPs, cystoscopies)
  • Post-op General Surgery (ostomies, gallbladder, appendectomies, colectomies)
  • General medical conditions including CHF, COPD, respiratory, kidney, liver, GI issues, CIWA, IV drug abuse, diabetes, telemetry patients, cardiac overflow (no cath lab)

Patient Ratios

• RN:

  • Days: 1:4-5
  • Nights: 1:6-7 (can go up to 1:8, but uncommon)
• CNA:

  • Days: 1:5-6
  • Nights: 1:7-8

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Wisconsin
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 1 year Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
• BLS certification required
• Competency in:

  • Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
  • NG tube placement and management
  • Chest tube management
  • Pleurex and other drains
  • Blood draws from central lines, ports, midlines
• Ability to titrate drips within set parameters including Cardizem, amiodarone, heparin, and insulin

Skills Required

• Experience with patient types listed above, especially orthopedics
• Wound care
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation

Support and Resources

• Charge RN with reduced patient assignment available
• Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) coverage until 7:00 PM
• Phlebotomy support for peripheral lab draws
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7
• Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy available during the day
• Centralized telemetry monitoring with tele techs and central monitor at nurse’s station

Technology and Equipment

• EMR system: EPIC (experience preferred)
• IV pump: Alaris
• Medication dispensing: Pyxis
• Unit-specific equipment: CPM machines, virtual monitoring equipment, ceiling lifts

Floating

• May float to other MedSurg units or hospital areas with MedSurg patients (including ER hold, ICU)
• Will only take MedSurg patient assignments

Orientation

• New Employee Orientation (NEO)
• One 12-hour shift on unit to learn workflow

Scheduling

• 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM (day), 7:00 PM–7:30 AM (night)
• Weekend rotation every other weekend
• On-call only during low census, up to 36 hours per contract
• Holiday work expected for 50% of holidays per contract
• Request time off approved by manager
• Schedule released in 6-week increments, about 3 weeks prior to start
