Description

Registered Nurse – Stroke/Neuro PCU

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Shift Details

  • Night shift: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Option for 4 shifts of 12 hours available upon request
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Must work one holiday per 13-week contract

Unit & Patient Population

  • Telemetry Progressive Care Unit (PCU) specializing in stroke and neurology patients
  • Joint Commission certified primary stroke center
  • Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5 (staffing goal 1:4)
  • Unit manages hospitalist medicine patients with neuro and stroke focus
  • Remote telemetry monitoring with tele-sitting to support patient care tech coverage
  • Floating within skillset required

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, and dysrhythmia interpretation/management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
  • Neuro PCU experience required
  • Knowledge of isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, IMC, and stepdown units
  • Experience managing IV drips such as Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, Ketamine

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license for Virginia (single-state or compact)
  • ACLS (American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of Neuro Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIHSS certification
  • Proficient in dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse – Neuro/Stroke PCU
  • Prior travel experience preferred but not required; first-time travelers accepted

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing
  • Background check covering 7 years of history, including education verification and multiple federal/state screenings
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Fit testing for masks within 1 year, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Immunization or positive titer documentation for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form during flu season
  • Two clinical references required
  • Completion of employment application/resume and annual skills checklist
  • Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
  • Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start

Additional Notes

  • Facility allows one shift call-off per 2 weeks
  • Requests for time off must be submitted with application
  • Locals accepted within radius rule criteria
  • Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neuro/stroke telemetry PCU with a focus on critical cardiac and neurological care in a Level I Trauma Center environment.
