Description
Registered Nurse (RN) - Pre/Post Op
Location: Minocqua, Wisconsin
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Information
- 19 beds total: 5 Phase 1 and 7 Phase 2 beds
- Nurses cover both Phase 1 and Phase 2 patients
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: Phase 1 - 2 patients per nurse; Phase 2 - 2 patients per nurse
- One nurse aide assigned to the unit
- Charge nurse and manager assist with patient care but do not take assignments
- Patients recovering from ICU may be cared for in PACU
- RNs are responsible for reading EKG strips
- EMR system used: Cerner
Patient Population & Common Cases
- General surgery cases including hernias, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, small bowel resections, wound debridement, amputations
- Urology, gynecology, ophthalmology, scopes, and orthopedic cases
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Strong IV skills and patient assessment abilities
- Ability to teach patients and their sponsors
- Excellent patient communication skills
Equipment & Clinical Responsibilities
- Manage CPAP, BiPAP, oxygen delivery
- Care for intubated patients with anesthesiologist as primary airway provider
- PACU RNs also perform PreOp duties
Scheduling & Shifts
- Day shift, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week
- Scheduling is managed by the manager with staff input
- Call required weeknights from 4:30 PM to 6:00 AM the following day
- Call rotation every 10th weekend; call schedule progresses through weekdays leading up to weekend call
- Holiday call assigned by existing staff rotation
- Call response time: 1 hour
- Assigned late shifts approximately one per week with variable start times
- Pre-op start times range from 5:45 AM to 7:00 AM
- Post-op start times range from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM
- Floating may be required to areas where staff feel comfortable
Orientation & Dress Code
- Unit-specific orientation provided
- Scrubs provided by the hospital
