Description

Job Opportunity: Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Details

  • Employment Type: Contractor
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 12-hour night shifts
  • Hours per Week: 24 hours

Work Setting

  • Emergency Department (ED)
  • Level III Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center
  • 22 beds in the ED
  • Patient population ranges from pediatric to geriatric (mostly geriatric)
  • COVID-19 vaccination required

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of Emergency Room (ER) nursing experience
  • Pediatric experience preferred but not required
  • First-time travelers are welcome

Patient Ratios

  • ED RN: 1 nurse to 3-4 patients (day and night shifts)

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)

Preferred Certifications

  • CPI/MOAB (Crisis Prevention Intervention/Management of Aggressive Behavior)
  • ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course)

Required Skills

  • General ED nursing skills including:
    • Peripheral IV starts
    • Blood cultures with proper technique
    • Chest tube management
    • Code blue response experience
    • Triage skills

Preferred Skills

  • Arterial line management
  • Critical care experience
  • Central line placement
  • Thoracentesis
  • Charge nurse experience

Unit Support

  • Charge nurse (occasionally takes patients)
  • 2 CNAs (1 HUC and 1 tech)
  • Paramedic coverage mid-shift
  • Phlebotomy support available for challenging/time-sensitive blood draws
  • Hospitalist coverage 24/7
  • Mid-level providers available 8:00 AM to midnight
  • Respiratory therapist coverage 24/7
  • Telemetry monitoring at bedside and nurse’s station (no telemetry tech for ED patients except for ER holds)
  • Unit secretary available 24/7

Technology and Equipment

  • EPIC electronic health record system (required)
  • Alaris infusion pumps
  • Pyxis medication dispensing system
  • Belmont rapid infuser (preferred for ED RN)

Orientation and Scheduling

  • Orientation includes at least one shift to learn unit flow
  • Weekend rotation every other weekend for ED RN
  • Time off requests require 7 days’ notice; longer requests require nurse manager approval
  • Low on-call expectations; travelers are called off first if census is low
  • Holiday shifts as needed based on staffing

Dress Code and Parking

  • Scrub colors: any color allowed; no denim, camouflage, or logos
  • Free parking in designated areas

This position is ideal for experienced ED nurses seeking a night shift contract with a supportive team and a variety of patient care opportunities in a Level III Trauma and Stroke Center environment.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Wisconsin
  • Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, TNCC
  • Proficient in blood culture collection with proper technique
  • Skilled in chest tube management
  • Experience responding to code blue/cardiac arrest situations
  • Competent in arterial line placement
  • Competent in central line placement
  • Skilled in thoracentesis
  • Experience in tracheostomy care
  • Medical-Surgical nursing experience
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
