Description
Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit
Location: Henderson, Kentucky
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour Days (6:30 AM - 7:00 PM)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours/week (48 hours upon request)
Job Description
- Work primarily on Step Down/Telemetry Unit caring for patients with conditions such as sepsis, CHF, COPD, DKA, cirrhosis, dementia, and post-surgical cases (urology, abdominal, ortho).
- Manage drips including insulin, heparin, cardiac drips.
- Float within skillset to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice; mid-shift float within the same campus possible.
- Weekend requirement: every third weekend; holiday requirement: every other holiday.
- May be required to precept students and new hires.
- Smaller unit with strong teamwork and experienced nursing staff.
- Scrub color: Navy blue; no competing health system or agency logos allowed.
- Teaching hospital environment.
- COVID-19 vaccine not currently required (subject to change).
Required Qualifications
- Active, current compact RN license.
- Certifications: AHA BLS, AHA ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
- Minimum 2 years RN experience, including at least 1 year in Step Down/Progressive Care Unit.
- At least 1 prior travel assignment required.
- Recent EPIC charting experience (checkoff class required).
- Must pass Telemetry interpretation tests.
- Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to initiate and titrate insulin, heparin, and cardiac drips.
Preferred Skills
- PIV insertion.
- Management of stable home ventilators.
- Chest tube and indwelling drain care.
- Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI).
- Administration of stable drips (lasix, protonix).
- Blood product administration.
- Continuous BiPAP management.
- Neutropenic precautions.
- Resilient, adaptable, and strong team player.
Unit Information
- Step Down Unit: 10 beds; Day shift nurse-to-patient ratio 1:4-5; Night shift 1:5-6.
- Telemetry Unit: 15 beds; Day shift ratio 1:5-6; Night shift 1:6.
- Charge nurse rarely takes patients on day shift; takes assignment on night shift.
Additional Notes
- Orientation occurs bi-weekly.
- Overtime applies after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts.
- No local candidates within 40-mile radius accepted.
- Three call-ins may result in termination.
- GSA hours not guaranteed during orientation week; guaranteed set hours otherwise except during unit closures on holidays.
