Description

Registered Nurse, Emergency Room

Location: Gardner, Massachusetts
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 3:00pm - 3:00am, varied schedule Sunday through Saturday, every other weekend and every other holiday


Job Summary

Provide comprehensive nursing care in the Emergency Department by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care. Deliver care based on established standards, protocols, and policies while respecting patient dignity. Collaborate with healthcare team members to ensure continuity of care and patient safety.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and reassess patients; develop and implement nursing care plans and patient goals.
  • Provide patient and family education tailored to learning needs and readiness.
  • Prepare patients and families for discharge, coordinating necessary support systems.
  • Delegate and supervise nursing interventions performed by others appropriately.
  • Prioritize patient care and seek assistance or reassign personnel as needed.
  • Document all patient data, interventions, and responses accurately and timely.
  • Report patient status thoroughly to healthcare team members for integrated care.
  • Serve as a preceptor, instructor, or trainer to promote learning among colleagues.
  • Identify and report patient safety risks and medical errors proactively.
  • Address ethical issues in patient care with appropriate plans.
  • Safely administer medications and intravenous therapy per orders and protocols.
  • Assess and manage patient pain using numerical pain scales; document and communicate effectiveness.
  • Perform initial patient assessments and triage protocols upon arrival.
  • Identify and manage patients at risk for abuse; complete mandated reporting and forensic evidence collection as required.
  • Implement safety plans for domestic violence, child, and elder abuse cases.
  • Maintain knowledge of disaster policies and procedures.
  • Manage patients at risk for violent behavior using non-violent interventions.
  • Monitor and document use of restraints according to indications and protocols.
  • Recognize abnormal lab and diagnostic results; notify physicians promptly.
  • Administer vasoactive medications with understanding of dosage and titration.
  • Identify cardiac arrhythmias accurately and timely.
  • Monitor thrombolytic and anticoagulation therapies per standards.
  • Provide care for intubated patients including suctioning, troubleshooting, and weaning.
  • Interpret arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, and signs of impaired gas exchange or airway clearance.
  • Complete medication reconciliation documentation for attending physicians.
  • Implement and monitor ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) bundle protocols; report deviations for case review.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasionally exert 20 to 50 pounds of force; frequently 10 to 25 pounds; constantly up to 10 pounds to move objects.
  • Frequent reaching, handling, and tactile perception.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, and color distinction.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Massachusetts
  • Minimum of 1 year of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience within the last year
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
