Description

Registered Nurse - ICU/PCU Float

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Float between ICU and PCU units; must be comfortable working all ICU and PCU units.
  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM).
  • Staffing needs re-evaluated every 4 hours; may float 2-3 times per shift.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block.
  • Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
  • EPIC charting experience required.
  • Accepts first-time travelers.
  • Local candidates accepted within a specified radius.
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of Critical Care Float experience within the last year, including both ICU and PCU units
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • Clinical skills including central/PICC line care, titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips, and dysrhythmia interpretation

Clinical Skills Required

  • IV therapy: arterial line management, central/PICC line care, blood product administration, IV initiation and maintenance.
  • Respiratory support: BiPAP, CPAP management, ventilated patient care.
  • Medication administration: continuous IV sedation, emergency medications, titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips.
  • Wound care: surgical wounds with drains or wound vacs.
  • Cardiac monitoring: dysrhythmia interpretation and management.
  • Endocrine/metabolic: adherence to IV insulin protocols.

Unit Details

  • PCU nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 5:1.
  • ICU nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 2:1.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing.
  • E-Verify or attestation required.
  • 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, completed within 1 year of start.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals.
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required; transcript or diploma may be accepted as placeholder if verification is pending.
  • NURSYS verification required for RN license within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) or chest X-ray within 1 year of start; updated annually.
  • Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Fit test for respirator masks within 1 year of start; updated annually.
  • Photo for badge required (professional quality, plain background).
  • Completion of facility-specific new hire paperwork and compliance checklists prior to start.
  • Two clinical references required.
  • Annual update of skills checklist and competency exams as applicable.

Additional Notes

  • Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs as of 7/10/23).
  • Must adhere to call-off policy and scheduling requests submitted with application.
  • Facility is a Level I Trauma Center with Magnet designation and advanced specialty care.

This position is ideal for experienced ICU nurses comfortable with floating to PCU, working night shifts, and meeting comprehensive clinical and compliance requirements in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
