Description
Registered Nurse – PCU (Progressive Care Unit)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
- Charting System: Epic experience required
- Floating: Required within skillset
- Patient Population: Adult and geriatric patients in a PCU setting, focusing on chest pain management, expediting ER flow, rule in/out myocardial infarction, overflow from cardiology and medicine PCU, occasional post-cath patients
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5 (goal ratio 1:4)
- Telemetry: Remote telemetry with monitors on unit; tele-sitting implemented
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, activation of Rapid Response/Code teams
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care
- Administration and management of cardiac drips including Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix (no titration)
- Respiratory support including nasal cannula, oxygen delivery, and non-invasive airway management
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Background Check: 7-year background check required within 1 year of start; must cover all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- Drug Screen: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Physical Exam: Within 1 year of start, confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- TB Testing: Negative PPD, QGold, or TSpot within 1 year; annual updates required; if past positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire
- Vaccinations/Immunity: Proof of immunity or vaccination for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu Vaccination: Not required but masking and declination form required if declined
- Fit Testing: Respirator fit test within 1 year, updated annually; onsite fit testing possible if arranged
- Education Verification: Highest earned degree verification required; transcript or diploma may be accepted as placeholder
- References: Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
- Employment Application: Complete application or resume required
- Skills Checklist: Must be updated annually
- Photo for Badge: Professional photo required with plain background, no selfies or filters
- E-Verify: Required
- State Police Search: Completed onsite first day of orientation for certain candidates (no action needed before start)
Additional Notes
- Requests for time off (RTO) must be submitted with application
- Facility may call off one shift every two weeks
- Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
- Must complete access and confidentiality agreement within 48 hours of signing contract
- Driver’s license or state ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity PCU environment with a focus on cardiac care and telemetry monitoring, suitable for both first-time travel nurses and local candidates meeting the licensing and certification requirements.
