Description
Registered Nurse – Oncology Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, typically 36 hours per week
Unit Overview
- 19 private beds in Oncology Acute
- Patient types: All cancer types (commonly lymphoma and leukemia), hematology, medical patients, radiation oncology, and gynecologic oncology
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: Generally 1:5 on days and 1:6 on nights; can vary between 1:4-5 (days) and 1:5-6 (nights)
- 1:1 staffing for specific medications/therapies as needed
- Charge Nurse present 24/7; may occasionally take patient assignments
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) support the unit: 3 PCTs during day shift (0700-1930), 2 PCTs during night shift (1900-0730)
Clinical Responsibilities
- Administer IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy regimens, including handling precautions and PPE use
- Monitor patients for side effects of chemotherapy and immunotherapy medications
- No nurse titration of drips; medication adjustments require physician orders
- Common set-rate drips include heparin and chemotherapy (e.g., 24-hour Methotrexate bags)
- Manage CPAP equipment; troubleshoot BiPAP only if it is the patient’s home regimen
- Telemetry monitoring provided by house-wide telemetry techs; RNs are not required to interpret strips (Phillips monitors used)
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active Illinois RN license (or application in process)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from AHA
- ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate
Experience Requirements
- Experience with IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy administration, including safe handling and monitoring
- Higher years of oncology nursing experience preferred (not explicitly stated, but implied by specialty and skills required)
Orientation & Scheduling
- Unit-specific orientation: 24-36 hours (non-billable)
- 12-hour night shifts starting at 1900; scheduling is flexible based on unit needs

- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirements
- Floating: Travelers participate in float rotation; float assignments are 4+ hours and based on fairness of previous float assignments

- Drug-free workplace; negative drug screen required for all panels
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius of permanent address
