Description

Surgical First or Second Assistant (RN Medical Center)

Job Summary

  • Functions as Surgical First or Second Assistant to the surgeon for complex and basic operative or invasive procedures.
  • May perform responsibilities of a Surgical Technologist if required, but preferably not simultaneously while functioning as first assist.
  • Specialties include Neuro/ENT, Orthopedic, General Surgery (Breasts/Plastics, Vascular, Laparoscopic, General Oncology, Genitourinary, Gynecology), and Robots (requires strong background and commitment beyond one contract).

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in surgical assisting.
  • Strong background required in Robots (XI), Neuro, General, Ortho, ENT, and Vascular procedures.
  • Not recommended for first-time travel healthcare workers without prior evaluation and approval.

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • RN license required.
  • BLS certification required.
  • First Assist certification with a first assist skills checklist (not general ORT skills checklist).

Work Environment & Support

  • Level III Trauma Center with Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center designation.
  • 21 Operating Room beds.
  • Patient ratio: 1:1.
  • Support available from Charge Nurse, Leads, and Supervisors.
  • Charting and equipment systems: EPIC, Alaris, Pyxis.

Orientation & Training

  • 2-week orientation including:
    • 2 days education/paperwork
    • 3 days general OR
    • 2 days Orthopedic
    • 2 days Neuro
    • 1 day Urology
  • Cross-trained to all Main OR specialties and Urology center; no floating to other hospitals.

Scheduling & Shift Details

  • 8-hour evening shifts, 40 hours per week.
  • Variable start times between 5:30 AM and 7:00 AM.
  • Weekend rotation: Not applicable.
  • On-call requirements:
    • 30-minute response time.
    • General/Neuro call slots: 3-5 AM slots Monday-Friday; 1-2 weekend slots (8-week schedule).
    • PM call slots: 5-8 overnight slots (8-week schedule).
    • Orthopedic Surgical Assistants: 1 day/week Monday-Thursday (5-week call schedule) plus 1 weekend call every 5 weeks.
  • Holiday scheduling options include working 4 ten-hour days or normal hours with unpaid holiday time off.

Additional Information

  • Scrubs and surgical bouffant caps provided; personal scrub caps allowed if covered by bouffant.
  • Free parking available (detached lot for days, attached lot for evenings).
  • Food services on campus include Starbucks and cafeteria.

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks.
