Respiratory Therapist (RRT) – Travel/Contract Position
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Specialty: Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics
Shift: Night, 3 shifts of 12 hours (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Adult Respiratory Therapist (RRT) role requiring critical care experience to work in a high-volume Emergency Room at a Level 1 Trauma Center.
- Patient population includes adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
- Floating within skillset required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Respiratory Therapist license in Virginia
- Registered Respiratory Therapist with at least 1 year of experience, including experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association
- Critical care experience in high-volume emergency department and Level 1 Trauma Center settings
- Experience with neurotrauma, cardiovascular services, and medical/surgical ICU patients
- Competency in arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation and ventilator management including BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, flow-by, troubleshooting high-pressure alarms, and weaning from mechanical ventilation
- Airway management skills including extubation, oral/nasal airway placement, suctioning, sputum collection, and tracheostomy care
- Proficiency in oxygen therapy and nebulizer setups including handheld, T-piece, trach collar, and ultrasonic systems
- Skilled in aerosol and medication delivery systems including mask, trach, MDI, and Medihaler administration
- Experience administering respiratory medications including Albuterol, Atrovent, Combivent, Flovent, Pulmicort, Mucomyst, racemic epinephrine, inhaled Flolan, inhaled steroids, bicarbonate, and lidocaine
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Clinical Skills
- Proficient in aerosol and medication delivery systems (mask, trach, MDI, Medihaler). Skilled in administering medications such as Albuterol, Atrovent, Combivent, Flovent, Pulmicort, Mucomyst, racemic epinephrine, inhaled Flolan, inhaled steroids, bicarbonate, and lidocaine.

Scheduling Details
- Standard schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7 PM – 7 AM).
- Option for 4 shifts per week available upon request.
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
- Holiday requirement: Must work at least one holiday per 13-week contract.
- Call-off policy: Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
- All scheduling requests (RTO, block, special) must be submitted with application.
Unit and Equipment Details
- Patient-to-therapist ratio: 1:25.
- Protocols include robust Assess and Treat, ventilator management, and liberation policies.
- Equipment used includes Servo I, Servo U, V-60 BiPAP, Optiflow heated high flow, inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) with iNOvent, and LTV1200 ventilators.
Required Documentation and Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address more than 100 miles from the facility is required.
- Background check covering 7 years of history, education verification, and various federal/state screenings required.
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Fit test for respirators within 1 year, updated annually.
- Immunizations or positive titers required for: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year, updated annually; if previously positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire required.
- Two clinical references required.
- Completion of employment application/resume and annual skills checklist.
- Compliance with facility-specific documents including photo for badge, confidentiality agreements, and orientation materials.
Additional Notes
- Locals are not accepted due to radius restrictions.
- Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
- Temporary license authorization available for out-of-state licenses pending Virginia licensure.
This position is ideal for experienced Respiratory Therapists with strong critical care skills seeking a travel contract in a high-acuity, Level 1 Trauma Center environment.
