Registered Nurse – Medical/Surgical
Location

- 12-hour night shifts
- 36 hours per week
Unit & Patient Population
- Medical/Surgical unit with cardiac patient focus
- Patient types include:
- Cath lab patients, amputations, pre-surgical cases
- Congestive heart failure (CHF), electrophysiology studies, atrial fibrillation, dysrhythmias, Coumadin loading
- Cardiac-Heart Failure patients
- Patient ratios:
- RN Day/PM (0700-2330): 1:4-5
- RN Overnight (2300-0700): 1:6-8
- Tech Day: 1:6; Night: 1:7
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Wisconsin
- Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification
- Experience administering cardiac drips including Primacor, Amiodarone, Cardizem, and Dobutamine
- Experience with tracheostomy care
Required Certifications
- Current RN license

Skills & Clinical Competencies
- Administration of cardiac drips: Primacor, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dobutamine
- Management of heparin, lasix, and insulin drips
- Chest tube and tracheostomy care
- Telemetry monitoring and interpretation
- Wound care
Support & Resources
- Charge nurse available (manages 2-3 patients on days, full assignment on nights)
- Unit secretary available 24/7
- Hospitalist coverage 24/7
- Respiratory therapist available 24/7
- Centralized telemetry monitoring with tele tech support
- Phlebotomy assistance for peripheral blood draws
Technology & Equipment
- EPIC electronic health record (preferred)
- Alaris infusion pumps
- Pyxis medication dispensing system
- GE patient monitors
Floating & Orientation
- Floating to other inpatient areas within scope of practice possible
- Occasional float to ICU for appropriate medical-surgical patients (rare)
- ED Holding area float with 1:4 ratio
- Travelers have priority for floating assignments
- Orientation includes at least one shift to learn unit flow
Scheduling & Work Policies
- Weekend rotation every other weekend
- No block scheduling
- Time off requests up to 7 days can be approved
- Overtime only with manager approval
- No on-call duties
- Holiday work expected once in summer and once in winter
- Fatigue policy limits work to no more than 60 hours per week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts
Additional Notes
- Scrub color: Any except camouflage or denim
- Pain management documentation required before and after administration of pain medications, with adherence to pain score protocols
