Description

Registered Nurse – Emergency Room (ER)

Location: Franklin, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, typically 7pm–7am)
Hours per Week: 36


Facility & Unit Overview

  • Mid-size hospital near Indianapolis with a 26-bed ER including 3 trauma bays
  • Fast track treatment area with 4 beds
  • No separate triage area; ER nurses perform triage within the department
  • ER holds are intermixed within the ER and managed by ER nurses
  • One designated psych/seclusion room with lower ligature risk and camera monitoring
  • 24/7 in-house security staffed by law enforcement outside the ER
  • Average patient volume: ~60 patients per day
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
  • Common patient diagnoses: abdominal pain, altered mental status, STEMI (sent out), stroke (some kept, some sent), chest pain, pediatric to geriatric patients, COVID, shortness of breath, moderate sedation cases

Required Certifications & Skills

  • BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS certifications required
  • TNCC and ENPC certifications preferred
  • Minimum 2 years recent Emergency Department experience required
  • Skills: IV insertion, EKG rhythm interpretation

Team & Support

  • ED Physicians and Mid-level providers include MD, DO, PA, NP
  • Charge nurse coverage 24/7; house supervisor coverage evenings and overnight on weekdays, 24/7 on holidays and weekends
  • Support staff includes medics, patient care technicians (PCTs), and sitters (PCTs or medics)
  • Respiratory therapists available 24/7, assist with breathing treatments, ABGs, intubation, and ventilator management
  • Radiology (X-ray, CT) located close to ER; radiology staff typically transport patients unless critical, then nurse accompanies
  • Nursing staff perform ~90% of phlebotomy draws; lab assists as needed

Technology & Equipment

  • Electronic Medical Record system: Cerner
  • Telemetry monitoring present; nurses monitor and interpret cardiac strips

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • 12-hour night shifts with a 6-week rotating schedule (shifts like 7-7, 11-11, 3-3)
  • Staff self-schedule; manager balances the schedule
  • No block scheduling allowed
  • Weekend requirement: every 3rd weekend
  • Holiday work: flexibility required
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Occasional floating possible, primarily to sitter roles; PCTs and medics floated first
  • Dress code: navy blue scrubs; no facial piercings except nose piercing with mask; no gauges; tattoos allowed if not inappropriate or vulgar
  • Unit orientation: 1-2 shifts with a preceptor

  • Punctuality and 100% commitment to fulfilling the contract are mandatory
  • Return to office (RTO) needs to be communicated upfront
