Description
Crit Care: ICU Neurology
Overview
- Contract role for an ICU Neurology RN
- 12-hour day or night shifts
- 36 hours per week
- 13-week contract
- First-time travelers are accepted
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Wisconsin
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Neuro ICU (4 years of experience)
- Neuro ICU experience within the last year
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIHSS
- Ventilator experience
- Tracheostomy experience
- Arterial line experience
- Experience with Epic
Unit Details
- 27 beds
- Average census: 25 patients per day
- Neurocritical care patients include ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, seizures, spinal surgeries, and brain mass resections/biopsies
- Non-neuro ICU overflow includes medical respiratory and general medical ICU patients
- Patient ratios: 1:1-2, or 1:3 for mixed acuity
Support and Workflow
- CNA support: 1:8-10
- Charge RN rarely takes a patient assignment
- Critical care NP coverage on days
- Intensivist coverage 24/7
- Hospitalist coverage 24/7
- RT coverage 24/7
- Phlebotomy support for peripheral blood draws
- Telemetry available at bedside and at the central monitor station
Scheduling and Orientation
- Every other weekend required
- Every other holiday required
- No on-call requirement
- Shift times: 0700-1900 or 1900-0700
- Schedule cycle: 6-week increments
- Orientation includes NEO and 1 unit shift
Floating
- May float to ED holding, other ICU units, a medical-surgical unit, sitter coverage, and PACU surge

- Scrubs: any solid color without graphics, logos, or designs

- Unit culture emphasizes teamwork and evidence-based nursing practice
- Fatigue policy limits staff to 60 hours per week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts
